In acknowledgement that regardless of my compassion, I will never know what it’s like to be black in America. I am listening with new ears. Before I had sympathy and an awareness that I don’t personally harbor those prejudices-yet I am acknowledging that is not enough. I need to acknowledge and grieve my own ignorance. I need to listen to the painful truths. I need to train my eyes to see beyond the veils obscuring the tradition of racism our society is steeped in. I need to expand my mind to a new pathway of solidarity.
