The Science Behind CoolSculpting Therapy
"Popsicle panniculitis" is a term originally coined by Dr. Ervin H. Epstein, Jr. in the 70s which "describes a benign, cold-induced, subcutaneous fat necrosis of the cheeks in young children who suck on the frozen confection" (1). By conducting observations and medical trials researchers at Harvard University were able to patent the CoolSculpting technology. These researchers concluded that by freezing fat it becomes ischemic and deprived of oxygen. The cold is not technically what destroys the fat, rather it is the blood rushing back into the ischemic adipose tissue which does the oxidative damage leading to apoptosis in the fat cells.
