Time for a fun fact!

Did you know there was a chamber built in the 1920’s that could hold up to 40 patients at a time and they would “live” in there for up to 2 weeks at a time?

They had sleeping quarters, dining halls, long hallways and walking areas and a gym.

It was built by Dr. Orville Cunningham, an anesthesiologist who became interested in hyperbaric oxygen therapy when he had a colleague with severe lung issues from the Spanish Influenza Epidemic. Dr. Cunningham figured out hyperbaric therapy could be a great treatment for the damage done by this widespread epidemic.

He built the Sanitarium or also known as “The Timken Tank” and began treating patients who suffered greatly from the Spanish Influenza and became a leading figure in hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

It was located in Cleveland, Ohio and after Dr. Cunningham had passed, it was torn down and used for scrap metal.

Hello everyone! Let’s talk about MS, Lupus and Scleroderma. What are they and how could hyperbaric oxygen therapy help?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is when the immune system attacks the protective layer surrounding the Central Nervous System nerves. This causes communication issues between the brain and the body. Symptoms typically include fatigue, vision and mobility issues, and sensory changes.

Lupus is when the immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues and organs causing inflammation/damage to joints, kidneys, skin, heart and lungs. Symptoms usually include extreme fatigue, joint pain/swelling and a butterfly shaped rash.

Scleroderma is an immune dysfunction causing excessive collagen production resulting in skin thickening/hardening or becoming shiny, potential damage to internal organs, Raynaud’s, joint pain and digestive issues.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can help MS by stimulating the release of growth factors and stem cells, which can aid in repairing damaged nerve tissues. An increase of oxygen could improve neurological functions and reduce symptoms

HBOT could help Lupus by reducing overall inflammation, increase circulation for better oxygen delivery, help regulate the immune system and enhance tissue repair.
