Vermont Climate and Health Alliance

Vermont Climate and Health Alliance Our mission is to use our expertise to inform the public and our lawmakers about the effects of climate change on human and animal health.

We are Vermont physicians, nurses, therapists, veterinarians, researchers, aides, and other medical/health professionals who share a deep concern about climate change and its impacts on our patients, our children, our communities, and our planet. We will use this information to support our urgent call to convert all energy use from fossil fuels to renewable sources as quickly as possible. Time is

of the essence. We are a home-grown Vermont based group. We are people in your local community who care about your health, and the health of the ones you love.

After the summer of 2023, when devastating floods overran our riverbanks and wildfire smoke filled our skies, the Vermont Legislature passed nation-leading "Climate Superfund" legislation.

Now, for that work to move forward, funding has to be included in the state budget. Whether or not that will happen is being debated right now in the Vermont State House....Please contact your state legislators today and urge them to fund that work.

It's easy and fast -- and very effective. Head here to learn more: www.vtcha.org/speakup

Your vote matters!

If you care about the health of your families and communities, you need to vote for leaders who will act on climate change. As we are seeing all over the United States, switching to a new clean energy economy is a powerful economic engine that creates high-paying, sustainable jobs.

If you’re not sure which candidates in national and state elections are likely to vote for smart, high impact ideas, take a look at the "Scorecards" on national League of Conservation Voters website ( www.lcv.org ), and your state chapter of LCV website. You can see the voting track records of candidates there.

Doctors and nurses recognize that climate change is a health emergency that threatens the people and places we love. We all want the freedom to breathe clean air and a safe climate for our families. The good news is that we already have the solutions to transition rapidly to a new clean energy economy (For example, head to the Project Drawdown website: www.drawdown.org ).

Vote for candidates up and down the ballot who prioritize strong action!

NEW YORK (AP) — Trying to lessen climate change’s sweeping impact, experts are hoping that attempts to improve the sputtering global public health system and sometimes-stalled efforts to curb global warming through collaboration can combine — and create a better system for handling the problem along the way.

Leaders of both the World Health Organization and the upcoming climate negotiations said Monday that for the first time, they are going to devote a day during December climate talks to public health issues. By concentrating on how climate change is causing death and disease, they hope, nations may act more on the root cause: carbon pollution.

Experts hope the sputtering global public health system and efforts to curb global warming through collaboration can combine to create a better system for handling the problem.

Climate change is an existential problem for human health. As climate change intensifies, the frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, cold fronts, and floods will increase. Undoubtedly, this will result in devastating effects for human health and wellbeing, contributing to increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, an already growing mental health crisis, and, most directly, heat-related mortality.

Increasing extreme weather events compound the poor quality and availability of public housing, placing those facing housing insecurity in the center of two major public health crises.

Last month, VNRC hosted our 60th anniversary celebration and annual meeting at Lareau Farm Inn in Waitsfield. Thank you to all of our wonderful members, friends, and partners who joined us for the celebration! We presented Darby Bradley with our 2023 Arthur Gibb Award for Individual Leadership, shared our new Vermont Environmental Report, and commemorated six decades of our work to protect Vermont’s environment with a short film we produced in partnership with Tamarack Media and WildLinks Environmental
Media. It was a lovely evening with great company and fresh local food, and we’re excited to kick off the next 60 years of our work for Vermont! You can watch the short film, which touches on VNRC’s legacy as well as the future of our work, here.

As seas rise and weather becomes more extreme, many communities are investing in flood prevention projects.

Some are creating rain gardens or other green spaces that absorb and hold water. Others are restoring coastal dunes that can help protect inland areas.

These projects can be expensive. So Tess Doeffinger of the University of Alabama says that as cities weigh the pros and cons, it’s important to realize that flood prevention can do more than just protect property.

For example, reducing flooding also helps protect people’s health and well-being.

They can improve health and offer spaces for public recreation.
