Students for a Sustainable Beverage System Working for a green, clean, healthy UVM! http://www.uvm.edu/~uvmpr/?Page=news&storyID=13129

Questions?

WE DID IT!!
-The exclusive Coca-Cola contract has been replaced by a contract with Sodexo!
-Starting 2nd semester, UVM will no longer sell bottled water on campus!
-1/3 of beverages in vending machines will be "healthy options!"

Good work everyone! http://www.uvm.edu/sustain/node/1184
or e-mail vstepuvm@gmail.com

HOW WE DID THIS:

UVM's Beverage Contract expired in 2012. By mobilizing ourselves

as a collaboration of student groups working with faculty and staff, we made our voices heard and influenced the measures we'd like to see included in the upcoming beverage contract. These included:
-NO bottled water sold/provided by the university on campus
-Decrease in single-use plastic beverage containers
-Increase in water & beverage fountain access across campus
-Increase in reusable materials through distribution of reusable water
bottle to all new students, and availability of reusable and
compostable paper cups by all beverage fountains
-Reduction in total vending machines on campus

OTHER SCHOOLS who have discontinued the sale and provision of bottled water on campus are:
-Wash U in St Louis
-Depauw U
-Seattle U
-U Portland
-Johns Hopkins
-Brown

General information

Students for a Sustainable Beverage System was started by members of VSTEP (Vermont Students Towards Environmental Protection), but includes anyone who signed our petition to ask for a positive change in UVM's beverage system! We worked with Eco-Reps, Student Government Association senators, Slow Food UVM, and Residential Life, and were supported by the UVM Office of Sustainability. Our members are concerned about environmental protection, human rights, health and nutrition, agriculture systems, and promoting local economies by supporting local vendors, among other issues. VSTEP meets at 8:30 PM on the 4th floor of the Davis Center, and we're still working on making a smooth transition to a bottled-water-free campus, along with some new campaigns. If you'd like to get involved, feel free to join!
