Mid-December in Northern California.
55°, blue skies, open land, and layers that move with me.
This is what winter looks like out here.
Grateful for the ground beneath my feet and the comfort that carries me through it.

13 Days In — A Pilgrimage of Grit, Blood, Beauty & Becoming

I’m 13 days into my spiritual pilgrimage and let me be clear—this isn’t a glam road trip with perfect selfies and curated moments. This is a real one. A wild one. This is me in the raw.

I’ve set up my tent 11 times in 13 nights. The other two? A cheap motel in Kansas on night one, and the backseat of my car in Flagstaff when wind and rain rolled in, reminding me just how small we are in the face of the elements.

I’ve camped in places with no power. No running water. No trash service. No toilets. Not a single creature comfort except the ones I carry in my soul. I’ve dispersed camped in the wild and watched the moon rise over unfamiliar landscapes. I’ve peed in bushes, brushed my teeth under starlight, and found a strange kind of peace in the middle of nowhere.

And let’s talk about the moment my moon cycle started under the full moon—with no access to a bathroom. No soft bed. Just me, blood, Earth, and the fierce knowing that I am alive. Wild woman level unlocked. Have fun with that.

I’ve had a chipmunk sneak into my tent (twice), a flat tire I couldn’t air up in Buena Vista because the power was out due to wildfires. Fires that made me change course entirely. And I’m glad they did. Spirit rerouted me to Crestone, Colorado, where I found the Stupa of Enlightenment—and received medicine I didn’t even know I needed.

Meanwhile, Dash—my ride or die—took a red ant bite like a champ. One swollen paw, one day down. But he bounced back, just like me.

From Crestone, we journeyed to Pagosa Springs and bathed in the world’s deepest hot spring. I let the ancient waters recalibrate my nervous system. I let go of what I didn’t know I was holding.

In Durango, I explored James Ranch, a regenerative organic farm and restaurant that felt like a hug from the Earth. I visited farmers markets, bought herbs and handmade soaps, thrifted vintage treasures, and let my senses roam wild.

Then we rolled through Angel Peak, New Mexico—a place that looked like Mars had a baby with the Grand Canyon. From there, we landed in Flagstaff. More markets. More desert magic. More opportunities to choose joy, even when things weren’t easy.

Now I’m nestled in Sedona. Land of red rocks, mystics, and medicine. I’ll be here for a few days to rest, receive, integrate.

I’m falling in love—with myself. With the Earth. With this primal, sacred, messy rhythm of life.

I’m learning to trust that the detours are the path. That the discomfort is an initiation. That beauty lives in the mud and the magic.

And through it all, Dash has been by my side. My co-pilot, protector, mirror. He’s felt every shift. We are in this together.

I’m sleeping better than I have in years. I feel alive. I feel like me.

This journey has taken grit. Guts. Grace. And a whole lot of grounding. But I wouldn’t trade a moment of it.

To any woman craving something more—freedom, wholeness, connection, soul—just know this: the wild is waiting. And she will hold you if you let her.

I’m high on life. Rooted. Radiant. Rewilding.
This is the path. And I’m walking it with reverence, joy, and a damn good playlist.

Mountain medicine for the body, mind, and spirit.

There’s something sacred about washing your feet in a cold, rushing stream while surrounded by ancient trees and wild deer who lock eyes with you like old friends. The stillness out here is alive ✨ filled with whispers of the wind through aspens, the crackle of a fire as the sun dips below the pines, and the quiet joy of sharing it all with my little adventure pup.

Every moment, from laying in the tent with tangled hair and tired feet, to savoring nourishing food prepared with love 💚 is a reminder of how deeply nature heals when we slow down and simply be.

This is what I came for. Real connection. Real nourishment. Real peace.
The kind you don’t find in a store or on a screen, only in the wild places that remember who you are, even when you’ve forgotten.

Grateful for this pause, this beauty, this life.

Who We Are

Nutrition Vixen is a health & wellness community that helps women discover their essence and learn what it means to be strong and healthy from the inside out.

Registered Dietitian and Personal Trainer Heather Deranja started Nutrition Vixen in 2014 because of her own struggles with her health and an autoimmune disease. Unable to obtain health insurance, she had to fight for herself and become her own advocate to stay healthy.

As someone who struggled with her health, confidence and feelings of unworthiness, Heather's mission is to help women release their limiting beliefs and embrace the limitless possibilities of life so that they can live fit, young, wild and free.

Through her own journey, she recognized the need for a change in the message of health, and Nutrition Vixen was born.
