Before 2009, there were not that many holidays celebrating the lives of transgender people. Rachel Crandall, head of Transgender Michigan, advocated changing that by creating the International Transgender Day of Visibility. This holiday aims to spread awareness and encourage lives of dignity and respect for the transgender community, for those seen and unseen. Today we are celebrating World Bipolar Day. This holiday’s goal is to understand those who suffer from the disorder, raising awareness to help create a welcoming community. Reducing stigma is the best way to ensure that everyone gets the help that they need. This could be for someone who needs treatment, or for anyone who knows another person with the disorder and wants to help. Today is known as the International Day of Happiness. Created in 2012 by the United Nations, the goal of this holiday is to promote economic growth that encourages well-being and proper mental health. If you notice, the length of day and night are almost equal, and for the International Day of Happiness, that was intentional! While Pharrell Williams collaborated with the United Nations in 2015 promoting his song “Happy”, the message still holds to this day! This week we are focusing on Brain Awareness Week. Started by the Dana Foundation, this week is important since it builds global support for the latest research in neuroscience, and helps to educate everyone worldwide on habits to maintain mental health. In the field of neuroscience, MRI scans tests for tumors, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases, while neurological tests further examine headaches, dizziness, and epilepsy. Having either of these tests done could help you to keep your mental health at its best!
