A wise teacher once brought balloons to school, told her pupils to blow them up and write their name on one. After the children tossed their balloons into the hall, the teacher moved through the hall mixing them all up. The kids were given five minutes to find the balloon with their name on it, but though they searched frantically, no one found their own balloon.

Then the teacher told them to take the balloon closest to them and give it to the person whose name was on it. In less than two minutes, everyone was holding their own balloon.

The teacher said to the children, “These balloons are like happiness. We won't find it when we're only searching for our own. But if we care about someone else's happiness...it will ultimately help us find our own.” ~~Author Unknown~~

"For many people on the autism spectrum, learning appropriate social skills can be a big challenge. It took many years and lots of trial and error, but we eventually developed a system that divides Pete’s social world into three groups: people Pete shakes hands with (most humans), people Pete hugs (family, close friends, Fr. Gregory, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and, of course, Cav Man), and people he doesn’t touch (mean people).

Enter coronavirus...

So, after finally settling on a workable set of parameters for social interaction with the world, Pete has had to adjust to the occasional elbow bump or foot to foot tap. He has adapted well to social distancing but is very concerned about when he will be able to resume his standard greeting practice of shaking hands and offering his standard greeting of 'Hello. I’m Peter Baxter. What’s your name?'

In stressful times, Pete frequently provides me with reminders to get out of my own head, to see the big picture, and to remember what’s truly important in this life. Pete’s perspective is rooted in faith, hope, and love, three things all of us would do well to have and to offer during these challenging times.

So, I offer for the world, Pete’s statement of hope:
'We’ll shake hands this summer, when the world feels better.'

Yes we will Pete. Yes we will."
