Nutrition is so important while breastfeeding! If we are eating the right foods (and enough of them) we feel good + make plentiful milk.

Let’s share some ideas with each other. Here are a few that I suggest to people:

- hummus & veggies
- apples & peanut butter
- fruit & cottage cheese
- trail mix
- avocado toast
- energy bites

💙The physical, psychological and emotional changes you go through after the birth of your child are what anthropologists call “matrescence.”

💙This term was first coined by the anthropologist Dana Raphael and later expanded by Aurélie Athan to include a developmental passage where a woman transitions, through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy, or adoption to the postnatal period.

💙A few ways to manage this huge transition to motherhood:
- Build your support system
- Communicate your needs with your loved ones
- Practice self-compassion
- Consider therapy
- Adjust expectations with reality of your new role

“The maternal brain undergoes significant structural and functional neuroplasticity as well as cognitive adaptations during the peripartum period, which are long-lasting and present throughout the lifespan.”

Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural process that not only creates a strong emotional bond between mother and baby but also offers a multitude of health benefits for both!

Breast milk is nature's perfect superfood 🤍 Designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of a growing baby!

🍼The ultimate immune booster: Breast milk is an immune boosting powerhouse, full of antibodies and immune cells passed on from Mom that help the baby's developing immune system fight off infections and illnesses. Several studies have shown that breastfeeding reduces the risk of gastrointestinal infections, respiratory tract infections, and otitis media in infants. Breastfeeding may even help to reduce the risks of diseases like diabetes, asthma, and childhood leukemia (American Journal of Epidemiology 2019).

🍼 Perfect nutrition: As baby grows, breast milk adapts to provide proper nutrients, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, essential for a baby's growth and development.

🍼 Brain food! A long-term study published in The Lancet (2015) demonstrated that babies exclusively breastfed for the first six months showed higher cognitive scores at ages 3 and 7 years compared to formula-fed babies.

🤱 There are breastfeeding benefits for mom, too! A study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2017 suggests that breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of postpartum depression. Breastfeeding moms also experience physical benefits - breastfeeding helps the uterus contract, promoting faster postpartum recovery.

Breastfeeding is a win-win for mom and baby! 💕
Remember that every breastfeeding journey is unique.
Even breastfeeding for a short period of time has significant benefits. And if you tried, and you can't, it's ok - don't stress, mama! 🫶

When I arrive at a client's home to provide postpartum support I hope to see something like dishes in the sink, toys or clothes scattered or piled up, lunch that might need prepared.

After just having a baby the last thing you should be worried about is dishes. In fact, in many cultures it's common for a mom or birthing parent to "rest in" or take up to 40 days to do nothing but eat, sleep, nurse, repeat.

As your my goal is to support that rest. I want to do the dishes while you nap, I want to unload the dryer while you feed your baby, I want to talk about your birth story as baby rests and I bring you a sand which.

You deserve to be taken care of as you recover from bringing life and I'm happy to do so. If you're interested in learning more about postpartum doula support and what that can look like for you, reach out! A Consultation is always free! :)

What is a doula?

You may want to have a professional support person help you through labor and childbirth. A doula is a professional labor assistant. This is someone who is trained to give physical and emotional care and support to women and their families before, during and after childbirth. For example, a doula can:

Help you stay comfortable
Explain what’s happening during labor and birth and any procedures you may have
Encourage you and give you confidence
Support your family and friends who are with you during labor
Let hospital staff know what you need
Help you get started breastfeeding
Having a support person like a doula can be good for you, your baby and your family. It can help you feel good about your birth experience. Having a doula can help:

Shorten your labor
Reduce your need for pain medicine during labor
Reduce your risk of needing a cesarean birth or the need for your provider to use forceps or suction with a vaginal birth
Your baby get a good Apgar score at birth. Your baby gets an Apgar test right after birth to check his overall health. The test checks his heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, reflexes and skin color.
