Big Food is being forced to change.

For decades, many of the brightest cereals and snacks on U.S. shelves have been made with certified synthetic colors like Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1. These dyes are commonly petroleum-derived and used to make ultraprocessed foods look brighter, sweeter, and more appealing.

Now Target has announced that by the end of May, every cereal it sells will be made without certified synthetic colors.

That means major brands will either have to reformulate or risk losing shelf space at one of America’s biggest retailers.

This is a huge signal: consumers are reading labels, retailers are responding, and Big Food is finally being pressured to clean up ingredients they claimed were “necessary” for years.

The question is simple:

If these cereals can be made without synthetic dyes now… why were they in our food in the first place?

Protein isn’t just about the number on the label.

A snack can legally market itself as a “good source of protein” with just 5g of protein but that doesn’t mean it’s high quality, complete, or easy for your body to actually use.

That’s the part most labels leave out.

Animal-based proteins like eggs, beef, milk, fish, and poultry are some of the most bioavailable sources because they provide complete amino acids in a form your body can efficiently digest, absorb, and utilize.

Meanwhile, a lot of “protein” junk foods are still highly processed foods with a little protein added for marketing.
