Okay this one is such a wow activity—kids think it’s pure magic, but it’s actually a fun little mix of art + science

Here’s a warm, mom-style version:

What if you could hold a tiny swirling galaxy right in your hands?

This magnetic galaxy jar is one of those activities that keeps kids mesmerized (and honestly… I could play with it just as long ).

What you’ll need:

A clear jar with a lid
Water
Baby oil (or vegetable oil)
Food coloring (blues, purples, pinks are so pretty)
Fine glitter
A small pinch of iron filings
A strong magnet

How to make it:

Step 1
Fill your jar about ¾ of the way with water.

Step 2
Pour in the oil until the jar is almost full. You’ll see it sit on top—that’s where the magic starts.

Step 3
Add a few drops of food coloring and watch it slowly swirl down into the water. This part is so calming to watch.

Step 4
Sprinkle in some glitter for that galaxy sparkle ✨
Then add just a tiny pinch of iron filings.

Step 5
Close the lid tightly and gently swirl it around (no need to shake hard).
