Games are an essential part of learning in childhood. They teach turn taking, impulse control, hand eye coordination, and fine motor skills!

In honor or World Autism Awareness Day, a big shout out to all those who know, love, and/or are someone with autism. You make the world a brighter place ✨🧩🫶🏻

OTs have traditionally worked closely with autistic children in hopes of limiting certain behaviors, types of stimming, and repetitive play. But we now know better, and the latest research shows us that children learn best through their choice of play, not compliance based play.

At BFF therapy, we offer neuro affirming care for your child that looks at the your child not as a diagnosis, but as a whole unique person. Following their lead in play while building new experiences for them to willingly join and learn through.

OTs help autistic persons with
✨ sensory regulation
✨ sleep routines
✨ expanding eating experiences
✨ fine and gross motor coordination
✨ social skills
✨ etc etc.

Most important of all, OT goals with an autistic person mirror the goals of the child/family, and may not look traditional.

KINDERGARTEN ✏️

I hear this question quite often- “is my child ready for Kindergarten?” Here are some practical ways you can prepare your child.

There are so many ways to prep outside of learning letters and numbers that are fun and will keep your child coming back for more learning.

✔️ playdoh and clay for hand strength

✔️Reading books together- pointing to items on the page

✔️Avoid pushing certain writing utensils on your child. Letting them pick the item will provide more internal motivation to participate

✔️Sing songs and read books to identify body parts for better body and space awareness

✔️Games like Simon says and red light green light promote self control and reduce impulsivity.
