Teens With Mental Health Conditions Use Social Media Differently

A large study has found that adolescents with mental health conditions, particularly internalising disorders like anxiety and depression, experience social media in distinct and often more negative ways.

These teens reported spending more time on social media, averaging about 50 minutes extra per day compared to peers without mental health conditions.

They were also more likely to engage in social comparison, feel dissatisfied with their number of online friends, and experience mood changes based on likes and comments.

Importantly, they reported lower self-control over their usage and were less willing to express their emotions online.

In contrast, teens with externalising conditions such as ADHD showed fewer differences aside from time spent online.

While the study does not prove causation, it highlights key areas where social media may intersect with emotional challenges in vulnerable young people.

Brain Criticality May Hold Key to Learning, Memory, and Alzheimer’s

A new theory suggests the brain operates best in a state of criticality—a fine balance between order and chaos where learning, memory, and adaptability thrive.

Researchers argue that this dynamic state enables the brain to stay flexible and responsive across scales, from milliseconds to years.

Importantly, criticality can be measured using fMRI and may be disrupted in disorders like Alzheimer’s, long before symptoms appear.

Sleep appears to restore this fragile balance, offering a potential therapeutic pathway.

The buildup of tau proteins in Alzheimer’s disease has been shown to degrade criticality, weakening the brain’s ability to compute and adapt.

This framework could revolutionize how we understand, diagnose, and treat neurodegenerative conditions.

Majority of Parents Report Sensory Overload From Daily Family Chaos

A recent survey of over 1,000 parents found that nearly three-quarters experience sensory overload, a condition where everyday sounds, sights, and chaos become overwhelming.

The most common triggers were children arguing, loud noise levels, and clutter from toys and household mess.

Urban parents reported higher rates of sensory overload (75%) compared to those in rural areas (55%), and married parents were more affected than single parents.

Interestingly, sensory overload rates were similar between mothers and fathers and did not differ based on the age of children.

Experts emphasize the importance of identifying personal triggers and making space for rest and calm.

Prioritizing downtime and self-care can help reduce stress and support the wellbeing of the entire family.

Mom’s Childhood Trauma May Influence Kids with ADHD and ASD

A recent study reveals that mothers who experienced adverse childhood events (ACEs) such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction are more likely to have children with ADHD or autism who report similar experiences.

These mothers also showed a higher likelihood of possessing traits associated with neurodevelopmental disorders themselves.

In contrast, no such association was found in fathers, possibly due to different caregiving dynamics or fewer male participants in the study.

Researchers suggest that a mother's early trauma may impact her ability to manage stress and form secure attachments, influencing a child’s emotional regulation.

This connection highlights the importance of assessing family history and caregiving context when diagnosing and treating neurodevelopmental disorders.

The findings advocate for broader support strategies that address both child and parent well-being.
