Survivors of psychological abuse, we can heal from this, but we need to do it on purpose. We need to know what's broken and what heals what's broken.

Gross negligent homicide is a criminal charge for causing a death through an extreme lack of care and reckless disregard for the safety of others, falling significantly below the standard of care expected of a reasonable person. It's a more serious form of negligence than ordinary carelessness, but doesn't necessarily involve intent to cause harm. (AI)

Needed to live:
Brain, heart, liver, kidney, lungs

Physical ailments that can be caused by psychological abuse:

Increased risk of lung disease
Exacerbated respiratory issues
Reduce lung efficiency
High blood pressure
Obesity
Headaches
Stomach aches
Rheumatoid arthritis
Studies strongly suggest cancer
Weakened immune system, susceptible to illness
Insomnia (increases risk of cardiovascular disease, weight gain and obesity, hormonal imbalances, and weakened immunity. Additionally, sleep deprivation can lead to slower reaction times, impaired cognitive function, and an increased risk of accidents and injuries, skin problems, seizure risk, insulin resistance, cognitive impairment)
Fatigue
Muscle tension
Depression (back aches, joint pain, high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues/disease, chronic pains, digestive problems, exacerbates existing health issues, increased mortality rates, Suicidal ideation and attempt)
Anxiety (rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and inflammation, leading to cardiovascular issues that decrease life span via possibilities of stroke, heart disease, heart attacks, etc.)
PTSD
Constipation
UTIs
Kidney infection
Bladder infection
Muscular skeletal struggles
Nausea
Diarrhea
Suicidal ideation and attempt
Dizziness
Deteriorating change in vision
Shaking
Cognitive Deterioration
Memory loss
Inability to create new memories
Difficulty in decision making
Hyper vigilance
Fear (similar ramifications of anxiety)
Emotional mismanagement
Anger (similar ramifications of anxiety and depression)
Damage to hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex)

Please look at the list of organs necessary to live and the short list of KNOWN and very normal consequences of psychological abuse and try telling me that psychological abuse isn't a form of gross negligent homicide. Okay, now let's stop judging people that choose to live and not die. Let them leave and let them live.

Physical health IS mental health.
Mental health IS physical health.

Just wanted to share a gratitude, body scan meditation with y'all ❤

Hey everyone! Let's activate our vagus nerve!

If watching or hearing people gargle makes you feel some kind of icky way, then fast forward from 2 minutes and 45 seconds to around 3 minutes and 15 seconds 🤣.

It's a weird, silly, but profoundly effective life hack. Have fun! 🥰

I'm just stopping in to say "Hellllooooo 😃" everyone!
S.O.Z.O. will be undergoing some preliminary work this month which hopefully launches us into the beautiful, sometimes messy, liberating work of full health!

What is one thing you did this morning that just delights the heart of the King? (If you think you don't have one, just take a one minute pause and love on Him.... there, now you have one...... as a matter of fact, I'll do that with you 👑💙, see video below 😊).

Now, look at the day ahead, lay it down, and step into one thing at a time ✔ You got this and you're so incredibly loved .

Next week, we're going to look at some things taught by Dr. Leaf. If you want to be ahead of the game, check her out on YouTube. I'll leave a link below for a four part series she does that I just looooooove. Straight from the lips of Google: "Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology." If that seems like a mouthfuls, no problem...it means she's smart and can help us heal 💔🩹❤.

I'm going to break down her proven method into language that I better understand, so bear with me if I use smaller words...I find them helpful for learning and teaching 👩‍🎓.

Okay, as promised, solution time.

Let's start with getting through the moment. Let's start with emotional management (which is not the same as emotional cultivation). Okay, so, a coping skill is simply that. It doesn't change you from the inside out. It helps you cope (yet primes you for change from the inside out, I promise.... stick with the series, you'll see). So, the thing is, the only time you need to "cope" with emotions is when something challenging is occurring. This can be a very external thing that you have no control over (maybe a random stranger is shouting at you for no known reason or you get really sad or bad or scary or disturbing news, etc.), or this might be an internal thing (which you may or may not have some control over, like a panic attack or a wave of grief or rage... things for which you may or may not be able to pin point the trigger). There are a billion gazillion externals and internals that may take place that cause challenging emotions to arise. I have fantastic news for you. The number of solutions that can combat these problems are less than the number of problems. Isn't that great??? You don't need one specific solution per problem. 🎉

Now, this is where you need to do the work. Not every coping skill is going to be your jam, but you have a jam and you need to find it. You probably have several jams and some of them will surprise you, so stay open minded. I'll tell you what I've told my clients for the past decade: "If it doesn't break your moral compass and it doesn't break your spiritual compass, then you better try it."

Two caveats before we begin: many people look to solutions to be one of two things (sometimes they look for them to be both of these things). They look for them to be very difficult to employ and/or they look for them to be magical. Y'all. That's not what's up. If they were wildly difficult, they'd be terrible tools. If they were magical, we wouldn't need to do any work. No one goes to the gym once a year and expects by the same time the next year that they are now a muscle-bound effigy of brawny wonder. So, we can't treat our mental, spiritual, and emotional health with less due diligence and expect more.

Don't expect it to be hard and don't expect it to be magical. Expect it to work if you work it.

Okay, here we go. I'm going to give you one tool with a bonus to help you cope (though this can be used in the moment of challenge, I'm going to encourage you to use it in the good times too because it's pretty unlikely that you'll use something you're not practiced in and people don't tend to "practice" once challenge arises). Recall, there are endless coping skills. Endless. I'm only presenting one right now, with a bonus. Recall though that not all coping skills will be your jam, try everything (and I mean everything) that doesn't break your moral and spiritual compass. Never ever knock a coping skill until after you've tried it several times and find no quality in it. They take time and commitment and humility.

Solution one: place your right finger on your right nostril, closing that right nostril shut 👃. Breathe in slowly, about 4 real seconds, through your left nostril. Try holding that breath in for 4 seconds. Breathe out of the left nostril, with your right finger still closing off your right nostril, again for 4 seconds. Try to hold that out for 4 seconds. Repeat that maybe 4 more times. Sound silly 🤣? This is called left nostril breathing. Your body is AWESOMELY made. Do you know what God did in you when He made that part of your breathing system called a nose? He created balance. Your right nostril activates your sympathetic system; that's your fight, flight, freeze, fawn system. Your left nostril activates your parasympathetic system; that's your rest and digest system, the one that directly impacts your heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, etc. When you close off that right nostril, you slow the sympathetic system and increase the parasympathetic system. Generally, just breathe because that's balanced. It's how you were made. If you feel imbalanced, try this "trick". You're so well made. One thing I like to add to this (when you double up your skills, it's called "bundling") is gratitude. For the breath in, I thank Jesus for something. While holding the breath, I thank Jesus for something. While breathing out, I thank Jesus for something. While keeping the breath out, I thank Jesus for something. Then repeat (3 or 4 times). I've used sphygmomanometers (blood pressure machines 🤣🩸), with clients while using this particular skill, and have watched (every time) the blood pressure decrease after employing the skill. Try it ❤.

Next we'll move beyond emotional management and into the realm of emotional cultivation.

More to come. Stay tuned! 🎵❤

Imagine someone is so abusive to their partner that their partner finally succumbs to symptoms of depression and anxiety... then the abuser tells their victim/partner to see a therapist or get some meds or both, the abuser oozes this deep but feigned concern for their partner's mental health.... but meanwhile the abuser remains abusive in these covert but very real ways.... insinuating that the problem is solely the victim's broken ways of thinking and being.

This is master manipulator gas lighting, blame shifting, and projection. This is a vibrant red flag for (best case) narcissism or (worst case) psychopaths. And it leaves the victim in a whirlwind of constant confusion and on high alert, riddled with anxieties and now sitting in a lonely spot of really feeling worthlessness. She'll lock every door every night, multiple times. It's not OCD. It's her nervous system still fighting to protect her. She'll wonder about getting lost somewhere on purpose just so she can be less of a burden on her loved ones. She's not actively pursuing death but she can't figure out how to actively pursue life. This is because abuse shrinks the prefrontal cortex, leaving the victim feeling confused. She'll forget words but not memories of doing life. This is because abuse impacts the hippocampus. She may experience headaches, back pain, gut pain, and other pains. This is not imagined. This is because abuse causes her fight or flight responses to activate and if they're chronically activated, too much cortisol is flowing through her system, which in turn keeps her up at night, which is when her brain should be resting and rejuvenating, but because her brain isn't doing that, the cortisol is not being cleansed out and it's causing foggy thinking and physical pain.... even when it does get cleansed out, there's so much of it that, as it travels down the spinal cord and into the kidneys then bladder, she'll now have pain in these regions because these organs are now on overdrive. Her liver will be in full blown C-reactive protein secretion, to try to heal her brain. Her bowels haven't been able to activate dopamine for her. Her body is hosting the abuse even when she's not being abused in that exact second. The psychological abuse can quite literally take years from her life. Her heart rate is off. Her breathing is off. Her blood chemistry is off. She'll die if she doesn't leave.

Does this sound familiar to you at all? There's hope. Not only can you escape, but you can heal and thrive.

There are some really healthy self soothing tactics I want to share with you for when you're in the moment of challenging emotions. What's better is there are some deeply healing tools I'd like to share with you as well that can change you from the inside out, heal you, and set you free. Your hope, joy, and strength are NOT done. You are not done. Healing is available and YOU are brilliant. You have everything it takes.

Fair warning, it takes work and can be tiring (but so does the abuse, so let's get your LIFE back!)

Stay tuned for those tips.

Who's ready for a little check in?

How are you feeling emotionally right now?

What's on your mind?

What's presenting challenges for you right now?

What successes have you experienced in the last 24 hours?

What goals do you have for tomorrow?

What could get in the way of that goal?

How might Jesus lead you to overcome that obstacle?

What does it look like for you to be living your very best life right now?

I believe in you.
What was that doctor's name in "What About Bob?" Leo Marvin? I don't remember, but he was right (even if he might have been a bit of a jerk).... Baby steps. 🤣❤
Take one step forwards today if that's what you can do (or a thousand if your coffee and quiet time are kicking in 🤣). Honestly, you do indeed got this.

Spirit Of Zion Ointment (S.O.Z.O.) provides compassionate counseling, active listening, trauma informed care, emotional support, and spiritual cultivation through telehealth sessions that address substance abuse, mental health, and spiritual wellbeing. With nine plus years of residential substance abuse counseling, thousands of field hours serving clients with addiction and mental health challenges, and a diploma from Elim Bible Institute in Biblical theology and counseling, I will offer clients the opportunity to learn skills and to equip themselves with tools that can be powerfully used to overcome emotional, spiritual, and SUD-related obstacles to their abundant life.
