When it comes to designing employee wellness programs, the most common mistakes I see is that the programs become divisive, instead of inclusive.

When that happens, employees may feel

โ†ช๏ธ left out

โ†ช๏ธ called out

โ†ช๏ธ or like they are being asked to do even more than they are already doing for the company.

Here is an example of a short-term "dry January" program that I wrote for a local company this season.

*This tier includes those who are already practicing sobriety (non-drinkers), as well as those embarking on this journey for the first time.

Prize: $15

*This tier is for those committing to a decrease of # drinks per week, but who may have a few lingering holiday commitments or celebrations.

3). ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด...

Prize: $9. (2+0+2+5 = 9)

*This tier is for those who are not ready to commit to a decrease, but would like to begin learning about alcohol and receive (optional) support to learn options for how to quit someday.

Note that, to run a program like this:

๐Ÿ’š Hire an outside resource. Employees should not be expected to share personal things with HR or any other associate.

๐Ÿ’š Have trauma-informed coaches, mental health counselors, and educators on deck.

๐Ÿ’š Provide sincerely compiled educational materials that are informative and ๐™จ๐™ช๐™ฅ๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š in nature. Please no canned, cookie-cutter, health threatening nonsense...

I see that reason and RAISE it one.

Journaling out values and getting yourself in line may be step one.

But the beauty of it doesn't take hold until you EMBODY your new values. Take them in, bring them to life...throwing off all that is no longer FOR you, even though it may feel safe and certain.

The biggest complaint and fear that I'm hearing from CEOs about their in-house wellness programs is either that they are lacking engagement from their employees, or that they've chosen not to provide wellness for fear that no one will partake.

When your program isn't being engaged, look here:

1) Leadership:

โ–ช Was leadership involved in the decision to have a program? If you pass your program down to HR right out of the gates, it is going to be an uphill battle from the word โ€˜go.โ€™
โ–ช Are all members of the leadership team on board?
โ–ช Are your core values woven into the fabric of your program?
โ–ช Is there a leader or middle manager making it feel โ€˜not okโ€™ to participate?

2) Employees:

๐Ÿ”น Were your employees invited to share their values in the design of the program?
๐Ÿ”น While some employees value extra time with their families as a perk, others may consider โ€˜wellnessโ€™ to be a safe ride home or a roof over their heads.
๐Ÿ”น Donโ€™t assume that just because physical and mental wellbeing are topping the charts per your google search, that it is true for your specific team.

3) Wellness Team:

๐Ÿ’š If youโ€™ve chosen to hire a team or vendor, are they actively reaching out to encourage participation? Many wellness teams are well-versed in wellness, but severely lack sales and marketing skills.
๐Ÿ’š Have they designed your employees' values into your wellness incentive?
๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ’š APPS ARE NOT A WELLNESS TEAM. They are technology, and they are boring.

Change your mind and the whole world changes โ€ฆ. was a saying I had posted in the studio years ago.

For me this year itโ€™s been, โ€œchange your perspective and your whole world changes. โ€œ

And yes, this is a view from Indyโ€™s Skyline Clubโ€ฆ but the real shifts came by putting myself in rooms with new people .
