04/09/2026
Starting on April 1, 2026, WIC clients will have more choices than ever before when they shop for whole grains.
Clients will be able to choose any brand of these foods:
Whole wheat bread, bagels and buns in 12- to 24-ounce packages. No more looking for the pink sticker when shopping for bread.
Corn or whole wheat tortillas in 10- to 48-ounce packages.
Brown rice in 14- to 32-ounce packages.
Whole wheat pasta in 12- to 16-ounce packages.
Bulgur in 10- to 24-ounce packages. Bulgur is a grain made from cracked wheat that is often used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean salads, soups or porridge.
These foods will be brand-specific, so clients will see the approved brands in the shopping guide:
Oatmeal in 16- to 42-ounce packages. This now includes steel cut oats.
Quinoa in 12- to 48-ounce packages. Quinoa is used in South American dishes and it can be served as a side dish like rice. It is high in protein and gluten-free.
Corn masa flour in 32-ounce packages. Corn masa flour is finely ground corn used to make dough for tortillas, tamales and other Central American dishes.
As a reminder, starting in April, families will see whole grains listed on their benefits in ounces instead of pounds. All children 1-5 years old will receive 24 ounces of whole grains, and women will receive 48 ounces of whole grains. This includes postpartum and some breastfeeding women, who did not receive whole grains before.
