Many of us don’t get all we need from our attachment relationships growing up. However, we can learn to be our own best parent as adults, i.e. being the “parent” we needed while a child. calls this earning security. Through therapy and/or other co-regulating relationships we can learn self-regulation and the qualities that come with it: resilience, boundaries, and how to be healthy interpersonally. What are the first steps to re-parenting your inner child?

Someone once said words create new worlds. This is true of our emotional life as well. How we label what we are feeling actuality shapes that feeling. If we have limited words to describe our emotional life, we will have limited emotional experience. Tools like a feeling wheel can help expand our emotional vocabulary.

We do not live in a culture that honors or promotes quiet. Finding a way to slow down and be with yourself is an act of counter-cultural courage. Find a quiet space physically, so your interior space can breath and have a moment to just be.

SPOILERS from below

Nate’s arc this season has been infuriating bc of his betrayal of the beloved Ted. But it has also been heartbreaking. There is a lot of “what’s wrong with you” being thrown around, but the writers have also shown us answers to the “what happened to you” question. Nate is experiencing attachment trauma triggers from Ted. S1 had Nate feeling seen and heard by Ted , filling a hole left by Nate’s father. In S2 we see Nate struggling to be seen and heard by Ted and his abandonment feels real to him bc it IS real to him. Sure, Ted is dealing with his own stuff, but Nate still feels the pain of these triggers. The scene with Ted in the office is so well written because it puts this attachment trauma on full display.
