Among the many significant topics we come to give recognition to in June we continue with Alzheimer’s & Brain awareness.

An important part of ensuring good mental health is being aware of disorders and diseases that may come to affect us in our progression of life, and having the proper community around us to face these challenges.

This topic is near to our hearts at Meaningful Minds Therapeutic Services, our Founder and CEOs father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and through that we know the importance of bringing awareness and offering helpful services.

To conclude our series of celebrating and showing recognition to both women’s history month and National social work month, Meaningful Minds would like to highlight past women who have made a difference in social work!

Dorothy Height
Ms. Height began her work advocating for her race against hate crimes as a social worker. This led her to having a prominent role in civil rights advocacy, establishing the center for racial justice and founding the national women’s political caucus. She campaigned internationally for women’s rights across many companies Including, mexico, India, and Africa.

Thyra J. Edwards
Ms. Edward’s took an international approach to social work taking part in journals, community engagements and union organizations. She had a passion for helping women and children primarily and organized care programs for those who were at risk and disadvantaged.

Mary Church Terrell
Ms.Terrell was one of the first Black women to earn a bachelor’s degree and a masters degree and the first Black woman appointed to a school board. She advocated for mostly women and women of color. Assisting motion for desegregation in Washington D.C and witnessing the passing of Brown v. Board.

Today we would like to highlight Tanya Brice!

Ms. Brice is a seasoned public administrator and social worker with over 20 years of experience in the field of social services.
She has dedicated her career to providing therapeutic interventions to foster youth, individuals with substance use disorders, and survivors of s*x trafficking.

Ms. Brice is the founder of Next Step Health and Human Service Consulting; a consulting firm located in Owings Mills Maryland that has helped more than 100 organizations launch their behavioral health programs. She specializes in assisting small organizations with compliance, program development, and evaluation. Additionally, she is a CARF surveyor, bringing expertise in behavioral health and opioid treatment accreditation standards.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (2005) and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Baltimore (2017).

Meaningful minds would also like to highlight Jaree Cottman!

Jaree Cottman, LCSW-C is a licensed clinical social worker by profession and owner/lead therapist of Afya (pronounced AH-fee-yah) Counseling and Wellness Services here in Baltimore, MD. Afya is a Swahili word meaning “complete wellness” which is the focus of all work at her practice. Her holistic approach to therapy centers healing individuals & communities in mind and body. She holds a Masters degree in Social Work from Morgan State University with an emphasis on public health. More recently she has combined her passions in a new web series and mental health brand called Kitchen Therapy with Jaree. In this work, she reclaims the kitchen as a space of resilience and empowerment, using food to nourish the mind, body, and soul while fostering mental wellness and cultural connection.

We start our series by highlighting Meaningful Minds very own CEO Jahneen Onyemachi.

Jahneen started Meaningful Minds in 2019 with the desire to provide services in a “meaningful” way to our most vulnerable populations. Jahneen is a licensed Social Worker, obtaining her Masters degree from Morgan State University and is continuing her education there by pursuing her PhD. Jahneen has a heart for helping others and is working to expand Meaningful Minds to include residential, mentoring and vocational services.
