Al-Anon in the Illinois Valley starts next week, Thursday July 6, at noon, in the Cedar Room at the IV Family Coalition Building, 535 East River, CJ. Al-Anon is a support program for people who have a family member or friend who has a problem with alcohol. Al-Anon helps us regain/maintain our own sanity by focusing on ideas that can be summed up by the popular Serenity Prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." Though the steps of the program talk about reliance on a High Power (God of our understanding), there are plenty of atheists and agnostics in Al-Anon (and other anonymous groups) who claim the group, program, or another non-spiritual entity as their Higher Power. Al-Anon does not cost anything, though our traditions require us to be "self sustaining through our own contributions," so a basket is passed to pay for our minimal space use and other costs. If Al-Anon sounds like it might be helpful to you, we hope you'll join us.
