LifeGuard Air Ambulance serves the Cedar Rapids community and surrounding areas with around-the-clock emergency and critical care transport.

LifeGuard Air Ambulance is UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s Hospital’s emergency helicopter. The blue helicopter has been a familiar sight in the skies around Eastern Iowa since February 23, 1981. LifeGuard is called to many emergencies in Eastern Iowa: including Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Dubuque and surrounding communities. From car accidents to cardiac arrest to seizures once the Bell 407 is dispatche

d the crew is airborne in six minutes or less - flying at speeds up to 160 mph. Speed, advanced on-board medical equipment and the expertise of the crew all add up to a better chance of survival and recovery. LifeGuard is staffed 24 hours a day for transport to the hospital of the patient or family's choice, or to the nearest appropriate facility.

Cedar Rapids Fire Department paramedics and EMT’s recently got to practice life saving airway techniques from basic airway adjuncts to placing endotracheal (breathing tubes), using the SALAD airway technique. Flight Nurse Cody Mefferd and Flight Nurse/Paramedic Nathan Simonson spent three days training each CRFD shift. Judging by the smiles and team work captured in these photos , it sure looks like it was a success! Who says training can’t be fun?!

The UnityPoint Health - Cedar Rapids St. Luke’s Marion Emergency Department and our LifeGuard Flight Crew have teamed up with Simulation in Motion-IA for a full evening of high fidelity simulations, practice of life-saving skills, knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration. Team members will rotate through five stations tonight as part of our committment to life-long learning and delivering our mission of providing the healthcare we want our loved ones to receive.
