A rainstick is a percussion instrument mimicking rainfall by holding a tube vertically and letting internal fill materials slide over internal obstructions, originally made from dried, hollow cactus with thorns pressed inward. Originating with indigenous peoples like the Aztecs and Diaguita, they were used in ceremonies to call rain, and today the instrument symbolizes nature and is used for music education, meditation, and relaxation. Modern rainsticks can be made from bamboo, wood, or plastic, while the internal pins or dowels provide the obstruction for pebbles or beans
