The DEAR MAN skill from dialectical behavioral therapy is fantastic! As Dr. Bryan Bushman, Ph.D points out, this acronym reminds us of how we can start and respond to potentially difficulty conversations. Here’s a breakdown:

D - Describe: describe the situation or behavior with a neutral/objective approach. This could sound like “you didn’t go get the groceries we decided on” rather than “you never do anything around here.”
E - Express: share your emotions using “I” statements. This might sound like “I feel overwhelmed when we don’t have ingredients for dinner.”
A - Assert: clearly outline what you need in the situation.
R - Reinforce: highlight the benefits of meeting this need. An example could be “Its easier to feel connected when the chores are done.”

Now the MAN part of DEAR MAN is all about how we hold ourselves as we communicate!

M - Mindful: stay focused on your goal and try to stay on topic.
A - Appeared confident: stand tall and take a deep breath—you’ve got this.
N - Negotiate: be willing to explore potential methods to meet both parties’ needs. Who knows, you might be wanting the same thing but are expressing yourselves in different ways!

Makayla is one of our fantastic clinical interns here at The Counseling Center! Not only is she passionate about working with individuals across the lifespan, she also has a special interest working with first responders and veterans. Check out her bio down below!

I am passionate about creating a supportive, affirming space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered. I work with individuals, couples, and groups navigating a wide range of concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, impulse control disorders, and dual diagnosis. I also support clients through life transitions, sleep and insomnia challenges, and broader mental health concerns that impact daily functioning and overall well-being.
I have a special interest in working with first responders and veterans, recognizing the unique stressors, identity shifts, and trauma exposure that can come with service-oriented roles. I am committed to providing culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care that honors each client’s experiences while helping them build resilience and practical coping skills.
I aim to collaborate with you in setting meaningful goals and creating lasting change. My approach is compassionate, strengths-based, and tailored to your unique story. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel both supported and challenged toward growth.
