Did you know that there's evidence that shows talking about or showing a patient their x-ray makes them more likely to have a knee replacement?

We know that imaging doesn't often correlate with your pain. We do know that imaging is a useful tool in ruling out serious conditions to clear patients for physical therapy. Then, together we can investigate ways to improve movement & function to relieve pain.

Why are we talking about getting punched in the face on the blog? I promise it makes sense once you read it! 😂

Simple changes can help make a big difference when there’s pain. They can also help us as clinicians to properly treat pain and keep it from happening again.

We know that our body is interconnected, but did you know just how confusing that can be sometimes? Back problems can manifest as leg pain, shoulder & neck problems can manifest as headaches. Turns out, our bodies are pretty bad at putting the pain and the problem together.

As a clinician, it’s my job to help untangle the pain from the problem and not just treat the pain but also the source. I want my patients to leave not just with reduced pain, but with actionable solutions to keep it from returning.

What if I told you that the next time you have an urge to urinate that is so powerful you’re almost certain you’ll leak if you make one wrong move, you should simply consider relaxing everything. This advice is almost insulting. I know what you’re thinking; “Great, another provider telling me I just need to relax. It’s all in my head. Does she really think I wouldn’t relax if I could?”

Learning to relax your pelvic floor can be a game changer for those struggling with urge urinary incontinence. Learn more about it on the blog!

Join us in Old Town Alexandria at Ms. Moxies Moon Shop for an opportunity to learn more about your pelvic floor! The workshop will be led by our very own pelvic floor PT, Marina, who will be guiding us through a gentle vinyasa flow followed with a review of pelvic floor basics: anatomy and physiology, what is considered functional v dysfunctional, and a diaphragmatic breathing lab to help you gain awareness of your pelvic floor. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and interact with a pelvic floor therapist if you’ve ever wondered whether you’re a candidate for pelvic floor PT or if you just have some general questions you’ve been wanting to ask a medical provider about. Expect to leave feeling informed, empowered, and more connected to your body!

One of the most common things Pelvic Health therapists hear is that their patients think they “just have to live with it” for so many symptoms. Things like discomfort or pain with intimacy, leakage when you exercise or cough, and diastasis recti (and so many others!) are not things that need to become part of your daily life.

Women especially have been historically left behind by our medical system and often told that what they’re experiencing is normal, when in reality there is a lot that can be done to help them. We believe in raising the standard for women and not allowing this to continue. No matter what stage of life you’re in, there is help to be found if you’re experiencing symptoms that disrupt your life.

Having trouble fitting exercise into your day? It sounds overly simplistic, but actually putting exercise time on your schedule can make a huge impact on making sure you get time to work out. Ensuring that your workout time is as protected as your work time makes all the difference!

It’s well documented that there is a huge knowledge gap about Perimenopause & Menopause not only among women, but among the providers that care for them. One study by the NIH cites women talking about a “woeful lack of preparedness that makes them feel disempowered and caused them to lose confidence in themselves and in their bodies.”

Menopause isn’t just when your period stops and perimenopause symptoms can range widely from person to person. Many women are often unaware that the things they’re experiencing are symptoms of perimenopause that can be alleviated with proper treatment, instead living with symptoms that disrupt their daily life.

Thankfully the conversation is starting to change with more and more people talking about Perimenopause & Menopause. If you’re looking to learn more we recommend the books “Preparing for the Perimenopause and Menopause” By Dr. Louise Newson and “The New Menopause” by Mary Claire Haver, MD.

It feels like a good time for a little reintroduction - Hi, I’m Dr. Albert Pannone! I’m a licensed physical therapist and board certified orthopedic clinical specialist. I’m also a certified functional manual therapist and licensed athletic trainer.

My love for movement brought me into the world of physical therapy as a teenager. As an avid martial artist, breakdancer, and general goof, I spent a lot of time finding new ways to move my body. During a Hapkido session I tore the cartilage in my knee and ended up needing surgery and physical therapy. Working with my therapist and gaining my mobility back sparked a love for PT.

As a therapist I have a soft spot for martial artists, dancers, and gymnasts but the area I really love to focus on is chronic pain. The most rewarding part of my job is helping people who think they’ve tried everything truly find relief and joy in getting moving again. My favorite thing to hear from patients is that I’ve restored their faith in physical therapy and in their own bodies after working together. I love the challenge of a tough case where I can really dig into my knowledge and training to help someone.
