Kindly Canines Therapy Dogs This organization is an all-volunteer group of certified/registered handlers and their therapy dogs. She was very upset to be in a nursing home.

KINDLY CANINES
This organization is an all-volunteer group of handlers and their dogs founded in 2003 by Marti Heater. OUR MISSION: Therapy dog teams will provide unconditional acceptance and support to those who desire canine contact through furry creative and educational activities and programs. HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Marti Heater, founder, relocated from the Quakertown area to Chambersburg in 2003 with her two dogs, Sammi, an 11 year old Golden Retriever and Callie, a 3 year old English Setter. In 2001, Marti placed her Mother-in-Law in a nursing home for special post-surgery care. On her first night, Callie then a one year old puppy went to see "Grandmom". Once they arrived, there were other dogs from the local Therapy Dog Group called PAWS with PATIENCE, who were there on their scheduled monthly visit. Marti’s Mother-in-Law began laughing and hugging the visiting dogs in her bed. The other residents also really enjoyed the dogs. Marti and her dogs were hooked! Having researched the Chambersburg area before they relocated, Marti worked to qualify as a "Tester/Observer" with Therapy Dogs, Inc. It was clear that a very large need existed in the area and she had two dogs that were anxious to start working. KINDLY CANINES MEMBERSHIP FEATURES:

In Loving Memory of Casey

We have lost a pure-hearted soul and a cherished member of our family. Casey was more than a therapy dog—he was joy on four paws, a steady comfort, and a trusted friend to so many in our community.

Always happy and forever ready for a party, Casey brought warmth and light wherever he went. He began his Kindly Canines journey in November of 2017 with his first visit to the Chambersburg Courthouse, marking the start of a remarkable legacy of service. Over the years, Casey completed 243 therapy visits, touching countless lives with his gentle presence and loving spirit. His final visit was at Hamilton Heights School, a fitting place for a dog who truly loved working with children.

Children were naturally drawn to Casey and found him irresistible. He had a unique way of forming instant, meaningful connections, offering comfort without words and joy without condition. Long before moving to this area, Casey was already making a difference as a therapy dog and was honored in 2016 with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, Bronze—an early testament to his dedication and heart for service.

Unaware of his illness, Casey was recently chosen and honored as Kindly Canines Therapist of the Week. It is especially fitting that he is now celebrated for the extraordinary body of work he completed and the profound impact he made through his therapy visits.

Casey’s legacy lives on in every smile he inspired, every anxious moment he eased, and every child who felt safer and happier because he was there. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered for the beautiful soul he was.

Two of our therapists, Chase and Taz, visited the Pennsylvania Working Dog Foundation Wall. Their owner captured a picture of the plaque that Kindly Canines members donated. Our organization makes a positive impact on our community and it's nice to see that KC is represented on the wall and will be remembered.
