There is sometimes a common misconception that you shouldn’t lift too heavy. That lifting heavy breaks your body down. Again, this all DEPENDS!!!!

There are numerous studies with elderly people that investigate high load resistance training with low load and found much more health benefits and muscle strength increases with high load. Does this mean that everyone who comes to Premier has to lift heavy weights??? No!!! But Hey, if you want too we have your back!

PAIN & TRAUMA-CAN WE DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE TWO?

Yes, acute pain usually follows some type of physical or emotional trauma. Arguably, when pain becomes persistent this direct link to trauma can be much harder to find. So what?

At Premier Performance & Physical Therapy we believe in believing our clients. We also try and stay trauma informed and acknowledge that persistent pain needs to be treated holistically.

During this pandemic and during times of uncertainty the isolated populations tend to become more isolated. Not only is our health being threatened by a super bug, but many are being threatened by an increase in physical and emotional abuse. There is also an increase in substance abuse and Mental Health Needs! Always believe people! HELP SOMEONE FIND A SAFE PLACE!

Also, lets not forget the healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic who have worked countless hours without enough supplies. Thanks you!

Common misconceptions:

1. This hurts-stretching it must help...

-stretching can be contra-indicated in some cases. Take “piriformis syndrome”, stretching is often times creates more issues.

2. I’m afraid of getting too big if I lift!

-this is really hard to do naturally. Also if you naturally have a bigger frame, filling it out with muscle as you lose unwanted fat can help prevent excess skin issues. As we AGE, one should be more scared of Sarcopenia than getting too muscular.

3. I just need to do more cardio and I will lose weight! I just need to do more!

-rest and recovery are just as important as training. You also have to individualize programs to peoples natural abilities and you don’t want to stress the system to the point of weakening the immune system and increasing stress hormone production.

4. Working my gluteals and core will cure my back pain!

-it might! Often times you also need to strengthen your back. The longer you stay away from specific back strengthening exercises the more likely you are to develop fear of these movements.

5. I feel stiff, so obviously I need mobility!

-we are still trying to figure out exactly what stretching does. It is less and less thought that it actually changes the length of the muscle. Also, is stiffness always an accurate perception. Sometimes strengthening and stabilizing using functional movements may help even more. Must balance stability and mobility.

Take Lessons from Dr. Sara Gottfried & have TIARA TIME!!!

Life can seem too crazy and self care usually decreases the busier we get. Having a sign to you and your partner is a great way to designate time for self care! It an be a Tiara, a crown, maybe some snazzy slippers, a silk robe, or a giant gold chain. Whatever you may choose, 10 minutes of Tiara time a few times a week is a great first step toward rejuvenating yourself and your family.
