In Honor of National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Education and Awareness Month, Team FlexCare is shining a spotlight on 5 important facts about MS.
1. MS is a chronic condition, meaning it is long-lasting and there is no cure for it. That said, it is important to note that for most, MS is not fatal. Many MS symptoms can be managed with medications and lifestyle adjustments.
2. MS can be diagnosed in children and older adults, often women. Those affected are typically between the ages of 20 and 50. Women are two times more likely to develop MS than men.
3. It is estimated that over 2.8 billion people have MS worldwide.
4. MS is labeled as an invisible illness. Many people with MS look no different from someone without it because some symptoms are not visible (blurred vision, sensory problems, chronic pain). Even during periods of remission, the disease still progresses.
5. MS symptoms vary. The list of potential symptoms is long and includes numbness, tingling, vision problems, mobility issues, and slurred speech. The unpredictable pattern of symptoms is caused by the nerves your immune system attacks at any given time.
