KNOW YOUR PERCENT…
Why 50 percent is important:
• 50 percent of women worldwide have dense breast tissue, which means that half of ALL women are falling through the cracks for early detection with mammography because dense tissue and a mass look the same on a mammogram. Further, it’s common for women in their 40s to have a higher percentage of dense tissue – anywhere from 50-60 percent!
By law in 38 US states, a disclaimer must be noted on a mammogram report for those with dense breast tissue that a mammogram is not the best means to detect breast cancer. Also, women with breast implants further face the risk of implant rupture or leak with mammography due to tissue compression. The cost for implant replacement in this scenario is at the expense of the patient.
• Nearly 50 percent of a person’s lifetime radiation comes from diagnostic medical tests! Mammograms, x-rays, CT and PET scans all deliver ionizing radiation to the body. Consider that children are having much more medical testing done today than ever before due to participation in higher levels of sports, which means their radiation exposure is happening at a very young age. Children are much more sensitive to radiation than adults. And, cumulative radiation never leaves the body and builds up over time to a point where it can become cancerous.
If these statistics concern you, consider thermography as an alternative form of diagnostic imaging…it’s safer and non-invasive and uses no ionizing radiation or tissue compression.
