In the field of equine assisted psychotherapy sometimes clients think they love horses and nature. They come to sessions expecting it to be so much fun without considering the farm environment. There are some things about large farm animals that are hard for our clients with sensory needs to grasp. The fact that it is hot outside, horses p**p and urinate often, horses shed in large quantities, they can be dusty, they may sneeze on you, the horses have flies around them even when we pick up manure three times a day has been tough for some of our clients. For this reason we have an office on site so we can provide art therapy techniques and other modalities we are trained in as licensed therapists. Sometimes you need to go slow acclimating a client into Equine!

Some clients choose to just stay inside and work with the dogs while others are able to acclimate to the horses but as counselors it's imperative for us to let the client make a choice.  We cannot make this environment perfect for the client because that would mean taking the horses out of their natural farm environment. The therapeutic practice of ERP can be utilized within the therapeutic relationship if the client is at that level.  However, we must ensure we are staying within the window of tolerance.


Some of the adults we have worked with found the horses to be too honest and raw for them so they declined the second or third session. This is just part of the normal process and as a new practitioner please don't take this personal.  Our agency practice is to offer three trial sessions to make sure we are a good fit for the client and vice versa!  These sessions are not free they are at our full price and if it doesn't work out we provide a very good referral based on the client's needs.

In 2003, while volunteering at Safe Havens Equine Rescue in North Carolina, I made the decision to train a three-year-old paint horse—Perfect Icarus—on my own. He became my greatest teacher. Icarus showed me the power of offering choice to my animal partners, because the only way I could truly train him was by ensuring he stayed in his parasympathetic nervous system and had multiple options available.

When I later founded my Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAP) practice-Skye Therapy, I carried that lesson with me. I made a vow that every employee and anyone who followed our work would be trained in the principles of animal agency. It remains the foundation of everything we do today.

Things to consider when purchasing a service dog or an autism support dog:

I am a big supporter of service dogs as I have had them myself for my immobility condition. However, service dogs are not a good fit for every human being which is why we really need to see why a client is in need of a service dog. We also have to remember dogs don't fully mature until age 3 so we don't know if they are going to love the work or not.

I have rehabilitated a few service dogs who were placed in a school environment and were incredibly nervous but the teachers thought they were just excited. I have also worked with a couple service dogs who were not a good fit for the client as the dog's personality really does need to match with their person! It's such a sensitive topic and dogs can be amazing service animals but it really does need to be a matter of putting the dog equal to humans and ensuring the dog is safe and comfortable wherever the human is. I have seen some dogs taken into movie theaters and concerts which is not a great environment for canines. However it always depends on the individual dog so having a thorough knowledge of dog behavior when you're given a service dog is a must in my book.

When we do service dog education we talk about how service dogs cannot work 24 seven because they do need a break and you have to be able to function without them from time to time when they are ill.  You also have to keep up the training with a service dog so investing time and energy into the dog is very important. If you purchase a service dog for your seven-year-old please don't expect them to keep up with all the training as it is on the guardian of the child to keep the dog educated.

I have also seen issues merging a service dog with regular family dogs because the service dog will pick up on some of the behaviors of the family dogs which could be undesirable. It's a big decision and there are some wonderful agencies around here that take all of this into account!! I am so thankful for dogs in our lives but we really have to be respectful to them and honor them like we would our own child! They are not a tool but they are a companion.

Silence is key in any psychotherapy session. When I am doing supervision a lot of times the clinician feels like they need to entertain the client but helping the client sit in silence is one of the most important sessions. Somatic healing and body awareness is pivotal when you're working in the field of mental health whether you have horses or dogs or you are just in an office! Practice this with your friends so you can feel confident in the session with clients. I found yoga can be incredibly helpful as a way to practice on your own especially in Yin Yoga where you hold a pose for 3 to 5 minutes. Follow us on our YouTube page for some yoga!
