New tastes coming to East 54 Marketplace in Chapel Hill!
Here is one of them!
Michelin-Starred Restaurant Chef Sujan Sarkar and Lime & Lemon Team to launch AYRA
In a major culinary reveal, Chapel Hill is set to welcome one of its most anticipated dining destinations, AYRA. Michelin-starred restaurant Chef Sujan Sarkar, celebrated internationally for redefining modern Indian cuisine, is joining forces with the Carolina-based team behind the award-winning Lime & Lemon Indian Grill & Bar (www.LnLrestaurant.com) to launch AYRA, a concept that blends heritage and haute gastronomy with a sophistication the Southeast has yet to experience.
Chef Sarkar is internationally celebrated for presenting Indian flavors with the artistry and precision of fine dining. His Chicago restaurant Indienne (www.indiennechicago.com) earned a Michelin star in 2023, the city’s first Indian restaurant to achieve that recognition. Sarkar has earned national acclaim, including James Beard Award nominations in 2024 and 2025, and praise from Esquire, Bon Appétit, and the Jean Banchet Awards. He is also the visionary behind acclaimed ventures such as Baar Baar (www.baarbaarla.com) and
Tiya (www.9yasf.com) on the West Coast, and Swadesi in Chicago, each applauded for reshaping how Indian cuisine is experienced around the country. Most recently, Sarkar opened NADU (www.naduchicago.com) in Chicago, a restaurant dedicated to regional Indian cooking, furthering his mission to highlight the diversity and depth of India’s culinary traditions.
For the team behind Lime & Lemon Indian Grill & Bar, with popular locations in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Jacksonville, Apex and Rolesville (opening soon), AYRA represents the next bold step in their journey. Lime & Lemon has built a reputation for making high-quality Indian cuisine approachable and part of everyday Carolina life, while maintaining standards of authenticity and hospitality. With AYRA, they now bring that entrepreneurial spirit to fine dining, positioning themselves as influential voices in the broader national dining conversation.
The name AYRA, derived from Sanskrit, means the new or eternally new. It captures the philosophy behind the restaurant: contemporary Indian cuisine that is upscale and sophisticated yet rooted in the timeless ethos of heartfelt hospitality. At AYRA, nostalgia meets control, familiar notes of Indian cooking are restructured with meticulous modernity, delivering an experience that’s designed to linger in both memory and meaning.
Menus will highlight the breadth of India’s regional traditions through refined tasting menus and à la carte offerings. Each plate will reflect Chef Sarkar’s hallmark style dishes that
begin with provenance and end with emotion. A progressive cocktail program will mirror this creativity, featuring clarified creations and Indian-spiced infusions. Interiors, inspired by Indian artistry and interpreted through a modern lens, will balance heritage with sophistication, while service will be detailed and ceremonial. AYRA is poised to become an essential stop on the journey of food lovers, drawing culinary travelers to Chapel Hill for an experience that bridges tradition with modernity. More than a restaurant, AYRA is envisioned as a cultural landmark, a space where India’s culinary traditions are expressed with precision, emotion, and elegance, placing Chapel Hill alongside global food capitals.
AYRA is set to open in early 2026 at 2110 Environ Way, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
