This article offers some intriguing and practical tips for learning about who you really are. Author Selene Nelson points out that this is an ongoing process:

No matter our age or where we are in life, our journeys of self-discovery are never over. It can take decades to understand who we really are, and our sense of identity may shift over time. Different jobs, relationships, phases, and experiences shape us into the people we are, but they don’t neces...

There She Goes
by The La's
1990

There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains

There she blows
There she blows again
Pulsing through my vein
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
She calls my name, pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
But I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
Chasing down my lane
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains

There she goes
(There she goes again)
There she goes
(There she goes again)
There she goes
(There she goes again)

Ironic
by Alanis Morissette
1995

Hey, yeah, yeah
Yeah, ah-ah-ah, yeah

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery, and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late

And isn't it ironic?
Don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
And who would've thought? It figures

Mr. Play-It-Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down
He thought, "Well, isn't this nice?"

And isn't it ironic?
Don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
And who would've thought? It figures

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out
When you think everything's gone wrong
And everything blows up in your face

It's a traffic jam when you're already late
A "No smoking" sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife

And isn't it ironic?
Don't you think?
A little too ironic
And yeah, I really do think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
And who would've thought? It figures

And yeah, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny, funny way of helping you out

Check out this video from Thais Gibson, a clinician and author who specializes in attachment theory. In the video, she refers to people she identifies as "dismissive or fearful avoidants," meaning those who tend to avoid connecting with others due to fear of rejection. I don't think you have to be labeled with any particular attachment style to glean some helpful perspectives:

The Gambler
by Kenny Rogers
1978

On a warm summer's evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
So, we took turns a-staring
Out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us
And he began to speak

He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of reading people's faces
And knowing what their cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So, if you don't mind my saying
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice."

So, I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sitting at the table
There'll be time enough for counting
When the dealing's done

Every gambler knows
That the secret to surviving
Is knowing what to throw away
And knowing what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep."

And when he finished speaking
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
But in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sitting at the table
There'll be time enough for counting
When the dealing's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em
(When to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em
(When to fold 'em)
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sitting at the table
There'll be time enough for counting
When the dealing's done

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sitting at the table
There'll be time enough for counting
When the dealing's done

This is not a "how-to" article, but rather a blog post I ran across from a woman who had been working on defining the difference for herself between self-soothing and avoidant behavior. Maybe you can relate to some of what she described:

Yesterday I had a therapy appointment. Aside from the normal anxieties about having a baby and running my own business (all par for the course), I had a question that had been on my mind for a little while. I had noticed that each day when I mentally reviewed my calendar for that day, any
