A movement assessment is used first to identify the overactive and underactive muscles of the body. The only true way to get proper alignment is to have correct balance of the muscles surrounding all joints. Repetitive motions result in our muscles adapting to the stresses placed upon them, this leads to muscle imbalances, improper joint mobility and postural dysfunction. When we develop tightness in our body it’s our bodies way of saying something is working harder than it should.

Once overactive (tight) muscles have been identified, Flex-Able’s Stretch Therapists execute a series of stretches specific to the limitation of the client. The primary goal of these stretches is to lengthen the tight overactive muscles, thus retraining the body to function optimally. With proper flexibility, the body is now able to move and function the way it was designed to.

[02/25/21]   Lately, we've been talking about stretching for athletes. But, we need to make the distinction that stretching is NOT just for athletes. It's important for everyone!

Timothy Miller, MD, of Ohio State University says that stretching is for more than just athletes because it "helps patients with conditions like diabetes and depression".

Other benefits are that "stretching increases blood flow, boosts oxygen levels and helps deliver nutrients to your muscles. It also removes metabolic waste like carbon dioxide, ammonia and uric acid."

If you're not stretching, you're regressing, not progressing.

Tennis Players!

The ITF (International Tennis Federation) recommends that "players should endeavor to perform a static stretching routine twice a day".

But it gets more complicated. There's a common misconception that stretching immediately before exercise prevents injury, and that static stretching before exercise boosts performance. However, only a stretching routine prevents injury, and static stretching before exercise decreases tension in your muscles giving you less explosiveness.

Now that these misconceptions are cleared up, let's talk about what you should do.

Your warm up stretches should be dynamic stretches, i.e., controlled leg and arm swings that take you (gently) to the limits of your range of motion. Don't confuse this with ballistic stretches that use jerky movements or wights to reach your end range of motion. As stated before you should be static stretching twice a day to maximize your potential. But, static stretching should be done at least an hour before exercise so you don't impact performance.

"What's the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Flex-Able"?

"Walking without pain" says one of our long time clients.

Claudication is a common condition where pain occurs in the legs with exercise due to a reduction in the circulation. Guess what improves circulation? You guessed it- stretching and sitting in the sauna.

Invest in yourself, and schedule a session!

A message to all the golfers out there:

What if I told you that Tiger Woods uses a pre-round stretching routine? Wonder why?

Stretching can relieve golf related pain, reduce injury, and improve overall performance.

Specifically, stretching can help with the notorious golfer's elbow.
Quad stretches help move your knees and rotate your body.
Core stretches make a fluid golf swing and follow through.

We can't help you stop 3-putting though 😁

STRETCHING THE SOURCE OF YOUR PAIN
Realign your body's muscle imbalances

Any chiropractor will tell you the source of your pain comes from your skeleton being out of alignment. This is usually caused by repetitive movement patterns that we do on a daily basis such as sitting at a desk for hours at a time, or sleeping facing the same direction in bed night after night. Over time, your muscles will adapt to being in these same positions, losing elasticity in muscle groups that are constantly in a shortened position. Since your muscles move your skeleton, it's your tight muscles fault that your skeleton is pulled out of alignment to begin with. If the flexibility of the muscles are not addressed, your muscles can pull your body back out of alignment (in some cases within 4 hours) after a chiropractor adjustment.

Flex-Able's Assisted Stretching Program first identifies your muscle imbalances by having you perform a simple movement assessment. We then incorporate a series of stretches specifically to your needs that will relieve the tension of muscles that are pulling your skeleton out of alignment. The average client can feel an immediate relief from the pain they are experiencing, and the feeling usually lasts 2 - 3 days. Just like eating healthy or working out at the gym, it takes time for your muscles to achieve the long lasting effects of being stretched (3 months on average) to create a balance of muscles around your joints.
