While workplace violence continues to be a top concern for many businesses across the country, the majority of American employees still report feeling unsafe at work. Although workplace violence incident rates and fatality rates have increased in recent years, much work is still needed to combat this growing issue.

Today, healthcare professionals, especially hospital personnel and nurses working in emergency care facilities, are most at risk of workplace violence.

According to statistics, workplace violence touches millions of people every year, affecting businesses across every sector and industry. U.S. businesses face lost revenue and reputation damages, as well as employee loss and turnover, due to instances of workplace violence. Although efforts are being made to combat workplace violence in the United States, the road ahead could be a long one.

When I started researching assaults on healthcare workers several years ago, very few people in healthcare would even acknowledge that it was a problem. In fact, I got lots of pushback from some Administrators for even mentioning healthcare worker assaults. Today, healthcare worker safety and security is a high priority for most healthcare Administrators and Supervisors!

Over the years I have developed several unique training workshops that were designed to help healthcare workers better manage angry and disruptive patients. In my most recent workshop is entitled...”The 3 Things Every Healthcare Manager Should Know About Workplace Violence!” Those 3 things are...

1. Workplace Violence is bigger than you think! Managers need to understand that assaults on healthcare workers are at an epidemic level.
2. The Healthcare Manager is responsible for staff safety. Based on OSHA regulations, healthcare managers are “legally obligated” to provide their staff a workplace free of hazards.
3. The Healthcare Manager can’t eliminate all workplace assaults and violence. But they can have their healthcare workers better prepared to minimize the impact if it does happen.

Does your medical practice have an extra half-million dollars laying around to settle lawsuits against the practice? That’s the going rate to settle workplace assaults. The average out-of-court settlement for one workplace violence incident is approximately $500,000. That sounds excessive until you look at the alternative. The typical jury award settlement for workplace violence cases is as much as $3 million!
Your practice can’t totally eliminate workplace assaults, but you can have your staff better prepared for it if it happens. And maybe by being better prepared, you staff can reduce the impact of the assault.

In America, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” may still be in effect when it comes to workplace assaults on workers. An estimated 25% of workplace violence incidents go unreported by businesses. That’s shocking!

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration revealed that roughly one-fourth of workplace violence incidents are never formally reported by American employers.

Moreover, as much as 90% of organizations do not comply with federal OSHA recordkeeping and reporting regulations, according to a study by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

Based on this estimate, workplace assaults on healthcare workers may be much higher than reported. And that’s scary!

What are the top 5 things you and your healthcare coworkers should have learned from the Chris Rock-Will Smith incident at the Academy Award Ceremonies?

1. Workplace violence can happen anywhere at any time.
2. When workplace violence happens, most people are too shocked and confused to stop it.
3. If the organization is not prepared to deal with workplace violence, the violence will escalate.
4. Most people that are not directly engaged in the workplace violence incident will often choose not to get involved.
5. The victim of workplace violence will often get blamed by some for causing the incident.

You can’t stop all workplace violence from happening, but you and your coworkers can get better prepared to deal with it when it does happen. If you’d like to learn more about how to get prepared for workplace violence, visit my website at www.MedServiceTraining.com

What’s your job responsibilities? Really, what are you responsible for at work? If you’re a Practice Manager in healthcare, you are responsible for everything! Practice Managers of course are responsible for overseeing all of the administrative and business operations of the practice... but their duties also include hiring and managing employees, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, setting prices, selecting vendors, managing the budget, and implementing strategies to make sure the practice runs profitably and efficiently. As I said earlier, they are responsible for everything!

In fact, they have so many job responsibilities that sometimes one of their most important responsibilities get overshadowed... their responsibility for practice safety and security! Put simply, Practice Managers are responsible for keeping the staff, physicians, and patients safe.

At one point, practice safety and security wasn’t a big deal because workplace violence at medical practices rarely happened. But in recent years assaults on medical practices have significantly increased.

Despite the increase in workplace violence, most medical practices never experience a serious staff or patient assault. Unfortunately, the unlucky practices that do experience an assault often discover too late the importance of practice safety and security. And the worst time to discover your practice has a security and safety issue is when a staff member or patient suffers a workplace assault, and an OSHA inspector shows up on your practice’s doorstep to investigate!

I don’t want to talk about this specific incident, but I do want to talk about the environment that says it’s okay to physically attack another person that was just doing their job. Never mind the emotions behind this violent act, it is another example of workplace violence! And if you work in healthcare, you are 65 % more likely to experience some type of physical or verbal assault than any other industry.
