Beware the destroyers...

Beltane, the ancient Celtic holiday that celebrates burgeoning life and the beginning of summer. And May 1, International Workers’ Day, that celebrates the solidarity of all who must work for a living and the power of unions—of united action to improve our lives.

Here in California, the roses are blooming, trees are leafed out, the birds are singing their little hearts out calling for mates, and we’re beginning to see the possibility that the pandemic might end. I feel that warm, spring urge to release a long-held, indrawn breath, rip off my clothes and roll around naked in the morning dew.

And yet, and yet…the news is still full of mass death, in India and Brazil and other places that are far away but where precious human beings live and suffer and die—some of whom are personally precious to me because they are friends and colleagues.

We finally have a grown-up in the White House again, one who is proposing and enacting policies that are surprisingly progressive and popular, that will improve the lives of workers and ordinary people. Yet the Republicans seem to have doubled down on their Big Lie and their attempts to suppress votes and solidify minority rule.

We’ve seen a victory for justice with the Derek Chauvin verdict, and yet daily we hear yet another report of police executing someone unarmed and black. It’s as if we’ve cleaned the house, but the rats are still scurrying around in the walls and infesting the basement.

Even the glorious sunshine is hard to fully enjoy, because here in California the winter has been far too dry, the green hills are turning to gold a month early, and the specter of wildfire is already looming.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my nearly seven decades of life, it’s this: you simply can’t go around feeling miserable all the time, even if there’s plenty of reason to, even if you think you should.

Beltane is a primal Pagan holiday, and pleasure is a Pagan virtue. We acknowledge that suffering, grief and loss are part of life, and that sacrifice is sometimes necessary, but we believe that pleasure—joy in the beauty of flower, the ecstasy of erotic touch, the lifting of the heart when we hear the birds sing—all of that is good for us.

Pleasure renews the wellsprings of our energy and vitality. It kindles hope and optimism and gives us the momentum to continue the work. It makes us want more of it, and inspires us to work and fight for a world imbued with beauty and abundance for all.

Nature has gotten herself all gussied up for this date—how rude and mean-spirited it would be not to notice and praise her! So consider it your religious duty, today, to take pleasure in what you can—without denying the pain and suffering in the world, but knowing that our movements for justice will be stronger when they are joyful.

Solidarity forever! Happy Beltane! Happy May Day!

People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but that’s bu****it. Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they’re afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they’re wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It’s all in how you carry it. That’s what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain. ― Jim Morrison
