We’ve come a long way from the support group we started out as over 12 years ago and added an array of services in response to the voices in our community. Our team consists of seasoned lactation consultants, doulas, child birth educators, dietitians, nurses, mental health providers, financial planners and health educators - all people of color.
-
We consider it a privilege to be invited into the journeys of families welcoming new little ones. And it is our goal to protect, and equip them with tools to help achieve a more balanced physical, mental, social and financial wellbeing.
-
We invite you to check out the services and come hang out with us and other families if you’re seeking comprehensive, compassionate, culturally sensitive, empathic care in a relaxed, non-judgmental environment. ❤️✨

Since 2015, Queen City Cocoa B.E.A.N.S. has served to build a supportive, informed & empowered community for families in Charlotte & surrounding areas. People of color are encouraged to embrace good nutrition & breastfeeding as a cultural & social norm through Breastfeeding Education, Advocacy, Normalcy & Support (B.E.A.N.S.) In 2018, it became an initiative of Harmony Nutrition & Lactation, LLC, an organization that provides nutrition & lactation education & consultations to assist individuals & families in improving their overall health & well-being.
As you may know, in the United States, African American mothers have lower rates of breastfeeding initiation & duration when compared to other races & ethnicities. Because of this disparity, we are focusing our support on African American women, babies & their families. Our primary goal is to educate these families & empower this community to embrace breastfeeding as a cultural & social norm. African Americans are also among those with the highest rates of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease & cancer, all of which can be decreased with increased breastfeeding. So while we are welcoming to all who desire to attend our events, our ultimate goal improved health for African American families.
QC Cocoa B.E.A.N.S. is comprised of volunteer lactation consultants, doulas, dietitians, health educators, social workers and peer counselors – all women of color. The implementation of initiatives is accomplished by only a few individuals through volunteerism, community collaboration and the generosity of donors.
Typically we conduct 3 monthly cafes, or support groups, in two locations in Mecklenburg and Union counties. This gives families a safe space & an opportunity to meet with other families and consult a lactation consultant (who is always present). Families are welcome regardless of infant feeding preference. Infants, older children & friends are also welcome.
In addition, we hold annual community baby showers to allow for nutrition and breastfeeding education & support of new & expectant families in the area. During these showers, families receive breastfeeding education, play games, eat and collect a large donation bag filled with gently used or new baby items.
