Meet the heart behind the safety at The Pearl. Our “People of The Pearl” series is where we’ll showcase people behind the scenes doing amazing work at The Pearl in Charlotte.

Sgt. Gerald Hunter, our lead Public Safety teammate, is known not only for keeping our innovation district safe, but for spreading joy wherever he goes.

Sgt. Hunter’s story with Atrium Health began long before he put on the uniform. As a child, he spent many holidays in the hospital after being diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri with hydrocephalus at age 12. More than 30 surgeries later, he still remembers the comfort and joy he felt when Santa visited his room, a memory that inspires him today.

For many years, he delighted others by swapping his security uniform for a Santa suit to bring cheer to children at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. His path from patient to protector reflects everything The Pearl stands for: community, resilience, hope and heart.

“I try to be a resource and a welcoming face to all,” he says. “It’s a great feeling to be part of the inaugural team here at The Pearl and know that what we’re building will truly change the way patient care is delivered worldwide.”

Today has officially been proclaimed Charlotte is Creative Day!

We’re honored to celebrate this recognition by welcoming Charlotte is Creative to The Pearl for the 10-year anniversary of Creative Mornings, their monthly breakfast lecture series that brings together the city’s arts community.

Charlotte is Creative partnered with local artists to curate the art installations throughout The Pearl, making this year’s theme — Innovation — especially fitting.

Meet Nelson. 🌟 He is the first of our new series called “People of The Pearl” where we’ll showcase people behind the scenes doing amazing work at The Pearl in Charlotte.

Born in Brazil and raised in Los Angeles, Nelson Rios has worn many hats - session musician, Grammy Academy voting member and educator. In 2012, he made Charlotte home, where he’s grown roots, raised his family, and spent over a decade leading music education for a local nonprofit.

Now, as a Teaching Artist Facilitator at The Pearl, Nelson helps connect art, music and science in innovative ways. Collaborating with Dr. Richard Cox and the STEM lab team, he brings creativity to the classroom, developing ideas and curriculum that bridge disciplines and inspire curiosity.

🎶 “The collaboration between arts, music and science makes The Pearl an incredibly unique place,” Nelson says. “It highlights how creativity and innovation can improve lives, even in the medical field.”

When he’s not blending beats with biology, you’ll find Nelson in his favorite spot, The Pearl’s Assembly Café, soaking in the energy of a place he describes in three words: efficiency, innovation and creativity.

“The Pearl is extraordinary,” he says. “It’s full of amazing people making a real impact on our community.”
