This is a good reminder to stay in the present moment. If you are feeling distress or tempted to use unhealthy coping skills I like to recommend one of my favorite DBT skills: Urge surfing which teaches us that distressing moments will pass and that we can ride the wave until the distress or unwanted urge subsides. I often encourage teens I work with to visualize what their surfboard would look like: colors, design, etc. It’s a great way to use visualization of the tool.
