As a plant based ultra endurance athlete( , I’m always searching for clean, simple fuel that can keep up with long miles and hard efforts.

Historically, I’ve relied on whole foods like oatmeal, veggie sushi, and real meals, which has worked great for events up to about 6 hours. Beyond that, it starts to feel less like racing and more like an eating contest. At a certain point, it’s just hard to keep getting enough calories in.

With a backyard ultra coming up in May, I knew it was time to experiment with something different.

Enter .co. I’ve been looking for an energy gel made from actual food with no refined sugars, no artificial sweeteners, and no junk. Tidlos kept popping up, and the ingredient lists are about as simple as it gets, just 2 to 3 real, recognizable ingredients depending on the flavor.

I’m excited to start testing these out on some upcoming long runs and see how they hold up when it counts.

Dry January is powerful but alcohol withdrawal is real
If you are cutting back or stopping alcohol this month listen to your body. Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms can include anxiety irritability shaking sweating headaches nausea sleep problems and intense cravings. More serious warning signs may include confusion hallucinations fever seizures or a racing heart. These can be medical emergencies and require immediate care.
You do not get extra credit for suffering in silence. Support and medical guidance can make Dry January safer and more sustainable. Choosing help is a strength not a failure.

Contrast Therapy for Mental Clarity & Emotional Resilience

As a therapist and endurance athlete, I’m always exploring ways to support mental health through both traditional and holistic approaches. One method that’s made a powerful impact in ny life is contrast therapy, the practice of alternating between heat (like a sauna) and cold exposure (like a cold plunge or ice bath).

While it’s often associated with athletic recovery, the mental health benefits are just as profound:

Improved Mood & Emotional Regulation
Contrast therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones and increasing endorphins and dopamine. It’s like a nervous system reset; especially helpful for those managing anxiety or burnout.

Increased Resilience to Stress
The intentional discomfort of cold and heat exposure builds mental toughness and trains the brain to stay calm under pressure. Over time, this translates to greater resilience in everyday life. Note the attached HR from today, one of the spikes is from my daily run, the other is from a contrast therapy session, can you figure out which is which?

Better Sleep & Recovery
The post-sauna “chill” isn’t just a vibe; it’s physiological. By supporting deeper rest and physical recovery, contrast therapy helps you show up clearer and stronger the next day.

Enhanced Mind-Body Awareness
Taking time to be still in the heat or breathe through the cold creates a meditative space.

As someone who works with people navigating trauma, addiction, and life transitions, I’ve seen firsthand how intentional physical practices like contrast therapy can help restore connection to the self.
