“Is it normal that I don’t understand everything my child says?” ⁣

If you’ve ever wondered this, you’re not alone! It’s completely normal for understanding to grow over time. A good rule of thumb:⁣
⁣
🗣️ By age 2, you should understand about 50% of what your child says.⁣
🗣️ By age 3, about 75% should be clear.⁣
🗣️ By age 4, most people (even those outside the family!) should understand nearly everything your child says.⁣
⁣
Every child develops at their own pace, and progress looks different for everyone. If you have concerns, trust your gut and reach out to a speech-language pathologist—we’re here to help! ⁣

Instead of asking questions, pause and give them space to respond. It’s easy to ask questions like “what’s this?” but asking too many questions can quickly feel like pressure to communicate. Pausing builds confidence and encourages communication. ⁣
