To some Christians I encounter in businesses I consult with, the enneagram can be uncharted territory. As a Christian myself, I have always been warned of getting caught up in something that is not of God. To measure everything against the Bible: "Test all things, hold on to what is good." (1 Thess. 5:21) The Enneagram's origin began in the 1960s from a man named Oscar Ichazo. He took the symbol of the Enneagram and transformed it into what I consult with today. The Enneagram symbol itself dates back to the Greek Philosopher Pythagoras. Many religions have used the symbolism and now even the Enneagram itself. The Enneagram is not from Christian origin, however, many Christians, churches and Christian counselors use it as a tool to help find self clarity. I have personally found a deeper understanding of my own relationship with God through enneagram work. No, there are no fire circles or rituals that I have ever witnessed within the enneagram community that would lead me to believe that God is not the Almighty; the creator of Heaven and Earth. In all of my studies there has never been mentionings that would lead me to another religion or question my belief system. It has allowed me, however, to see how I hide from God and from myself. It has shown me the complexity of my motivations, my reactions and ultimately the outcome of my reactions. The Enneagram has taught me to see the warning signs of unhealthy behavior and therefore reminding me to run faster to the Bible for guidance, assurance and grace.
If you're reading this and are a Christian who is weary about what the Enneagram actually is, I hope this puts your mind at ease. If not for your own self examination but for encouraging your friends, colleagues and family members who are learning how to improve themselves through the Enneagram.
