Our Gertie wishes you a happy Wednesday! Gert is the top ranked chicken in our flock and her favorite free-ranging find is snakes. Yep, she’s great at catching them (even those over a foot long) and after she kills them, she sucks them down like spaghetti. It’s gross, I know but her great hunting skills helps keep our yard reptile free.

Q: I hear about the importance of good gut health a lot in the media, but I don’t have to worry about gut health if I don’t have any gastrointestinal symptoms, right?

A: No, you can have gut issues without any gastrointestinal symptoms. Some of these sometime silent contributors to gut health include:
-Microbial dysbiosis (imbalance in good and bad gut flora)
-Poor detoxification (e.g., your body is lacking important co-factors that impact liver detoxification)
-Inflammation in your gut
-Food sensitivities/leaky gut (yes you can have both of these with no gastrointestinal symptoms)
-Dysregulated immune function (most of your immunity is located in your gut)
-Low stomach and other digestive enzymes (this leads to poor digestion and malabsorption—some thyroid conditions are attributed to this)
My gut issues presented themselves through sleep disruption and adrenal fatigue.

Do you suffer from constipation? The average American is constipated. Chronically constipated. This is a common problem for my clients. My approach is to determine what their body is missing that is keeping them from "going." Often it's a mineral deficiency, microbial dysbiosis, dehydration, lack of fiber and/or poor lifestyle choices.

Research indicates that gut health impacts overall health. A comprehensive stool test (functional test) allows you to take a closer look at what’s going on in the gut. The gut microbiome plays a critical role in mediating the effects of diet and other factors on health, including digestive, immune, metabolic and neuroendocrine functions. Assessing GI health with the proper tools can help someone get to the root cause of chronic illness. I recommend a stool test to my clients who have been having issues with slow or fast transit time, symptoms of poor gut health, or when a client requests one.

Comprehensive stool testing can detect parasites, bacteria, viruses, and fungi by targeting the specific DNA of the organisms tested.

Autoimmune diseases are fundamentally the same—an unhealthy gut and a dysregulated immune system. These diseases are differentiated by the parts of the body that are “attacked” by the body’s antibodies. My treatment of autoimmune disease is the same regardless. Heal the gut, eliminate the triggers that started the “storm,” and regulate the immune system.

Acid reflux is rarely too much acid in the stomach, but rather—stomach acid in the WRONG place. I help my clients get rid of their reflux by getting to the reason why it is moving past the esophageal sphincter in the first place.

One of the most important things you can do to improve your digestion is to chew your food thoroughly before swallowing. The average American chews their food six times before swallowing instead of the recommended 20 times. Slow down and take your time when eating your food—you’ll have less bloating, gas, and reflux.

We tend to overlook an important component of both our physical and emotional wellbeing: Nature. Fresh air, sun, water, trees. Nature is a magical thing, and according to some studies, can have strong healing powers — such as improving mood, boosting the immune system, reducing anxiety, and promoting healing.

I work predominantly with mid- to late-career professionals that are interested in taking control of their wellness today so they can more-fully enjoy retirement (travel, family, and friends) later. My clients are aware that Americans are living longer than ever before and they want to be proactive to avoid spending their retirement savings on health issues.

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I help my clients to develop life-long changes with regards to their health, including sleeping better, eating better, curtailing stress, eliminating cravings, improving energy, and enjoying a more-fulfilling life.

Lasting changes stem from learning techniques that help you break bad behaviors and adopt new, good ones. Changing little things in your everyday routine adds up to big, positive healthy changes and results in a balanced fulfilling life.
