If you're a parent, knowing the signs of a food allergy could be critical. 🥜🥛

Watch for symptoms like breathing issues, wheezing, sneezing, stomach problems, hives, swelling, or pale skin. Not every reaction is an allergy, though. Caffeine jitters, skin irritation from acidic foods, or food poisoning can look similar but require different approaches.

If you suspect your child has a food allergy, see an allergist for proper testing. Knowing what triggers reactions helps you protect them from complications and manage their diet safely.

Do you know how to use an EpiPen® in an emergency? This knowledge could save a life.

An EpiPen® contains epinephrine, a medication that quickly reverses severe allergic reactions by opening airways and increasing blood pressure. If you experience difficulty breathing, face or throat swelling, rapid heartbeat, hives, or dizziness after exposure to an allergen, use your EpiPen® immediately and call 911.

Understanding proper use, storage, and when your EpiPen® expires is crucial for anyone with severe allergies. Read the full guide at carolinaasthma.com/blog/how-to-use-an-epipen/

Should asthma prevent you from exercising? Absolutely not!

Exercise-induced asthma affects millions, but with proper management, you can stay active. Symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness typically appear within 5-10 minutes of starting exercise.

Quick tips: Warm up properly, use prescribed medications before exercise, avoid outdoor activity during extreme temps or high pollen, and work with your provider for a personalized plan.

Many elite athletes have asthma and excel in demanding sports. You can too! Read more at carolinaasthma.com/blog/should-asthma-prevent-exercise/

With Winter allergies in Charlotte, prevention is key! It's pretty much always allergy season around here. ❄️🤧

Prevent winter allergy flare-ups with these strategies:

- Wash bedding weekly in hot water to eliminate dust mites and pet dander
- Monitor pollen counts before heading outside using our daily tracker
- Stay indoors during windy days when allergens are swirling
- Add moisture to your heating system to combat dry air (but not too much or you'll create mold)
- Bathe nightly to wash allergens off before bed
- Avoid overheating your home, which Charlotte residents tend to do during our mild winters

Wondering if your child has allergies?

Common symptoms include sneezing, wheezing, coughing, red itchy watery eyes, runny nose, itchy ears, skin rashes, hives, throat tightness, shortness of breath, and stomach issues. Allergic reactions can also make asthma or eczema symptoms worse.

While most reactions are just irritating, some can be life threatening. Kids with severe allergies may experience anaphylaxis, a medical emergency causing breathing problems, low blood pressure, vomiting, and fainting. If you suspect anaphylaxis, seek urgent medical attention immediately.

If your child is experiencing allergy symptoms, contact us for comprehensive testing and treatment.

While you're out trick-or-treating tonight, don't forget to check candy labels if you have food allergies! Many fun-sized treats contain common allergens like peanuts, tree nuts, milk, and soy.

A few more safety tips for tonight:

- Carry your epinephrine auto-injector if prescribed
- Consider the teal pumpkin for non-food treats
- Wash hands after handling candy to avoid cross-contact

Have a safe and happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃🍬
