Record breaking summer temperatures mean kids are at greater risk for heatstroke! When a car's internal temperature can rise by 19 degrees in just 10 minutes, it's important to double-check the back seat before leaving your vehicle. Most parents and caregivers believe it could never happen to them, but in most cases, the child is left behind unknowingly.

It’s that time of the year when family and friends gather together and cook on the grill. A recent apartment fire caused significant damage (see below) and was the result of unsafe grilling. The Shelby Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind you to follow important tips to make your cookouts safe and enjoyable. These tips include such things as only using grills outdoors in safe areas, never leave a grill unattended, keeping children and pets a safe distance away from the grill, and more. For a detailed list of grilling safety tips, visit www.cityofshelby.com/firesafety .

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for our area until 8 pm, on Wednesday, June 25.

Heat index values are expected to reach 105-108 degrees. This extreme heat can cause heat related illnesses.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach dangerous temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

For the latest weather updates, visit the National Weather Service website at https://www.weather.gov/.
