MORVEN - Jean Hightower Gardner, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at her home. She will be remembered for her laughter and love of life.

Born February 6, 1937, in Wadesboro to Forace Monroe & Peg Autrey Hightower, she attended Wadesboro City Schools, graduating with the Class of 1954. She attended Brevard College and was a graduate of Carolina Business College in Charlotte in 1956.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ted; daughters Debi (Kevin) Carr of Christmas, Florida, and Denise (Matt) Rees of Tarpon Springs, Florida, 4 grandchildren, Daeci Morton, Coltan Carr, Wesley Carr and Ben Poppe and 2 great grandchildren, Silas and Elliott Morton. She is also second Mom to Wayne (Pam) Exline of Zanesville, Ohio, and Connie Vizaro of St. Petersburg, Florida.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. She owned her own travel business for 13 years before retiring in 2007. She was also active with the Ansonia Theatre, having served as its manager for 2 ½ years, as well as serving on the Anson County Arts County Board for 3 years.

She loved to travel, and her travels took to Norway, Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada and many of the Caribbean Islands, plus Hawaii and many of the states in the US.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM at Leavitt Funeral Home on Saturday, August 16, 2025, with burial following Anson Memorial Park.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Patricia "Pat" Maner Hildreth

WADESBORO, On Monday, August 11, 2025, Mrs. Patricia “Pat” Maner Hildreth 81 years old, passed away peacefully at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Ricketts officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Friday and other times at the home of her son, Brian and daughter-in-law on Hwy. 109 N. from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM on the days prior to the service.

Pat was born February 3, 1944, in Anson County, NC and was the daughter of the late James Alexander Maner and Ollie Gilmore Maner. Pat enjoyed her work in various textile mills such as Burlington Industries, West Knitting Mill, and finally retiring from Perfect Fit. She loved working hard to help support her family.

She enjoyed attending concerts and supported Paul Schadt and Kat Country Radio. She loved Christmas with family and especially the many years her family participated in the Burlington Street Christmas lights with all her neighbors. She loved to travel to the beach with family and especially enjoyed the golf cart rides and parades.

Times shared with her sister, Hilda were always a highlight for her. They enjoyed many trips to Albemarle to share a meal at Jay’s Seafood. She also looked forward to her Wadesboro Class Reunions which gave her the perfect excuse to buy a new outfit.

Shopping was also a favorite pastime of hers. She was an expert QVC shopper and loved Wal Mart.

Pat loved her family dearly. She attended many dance recitals and competitions to watch her favorite tapper, great-grandchild Ainsley perform. She enjoyed helping care for Ainsley as a baby with our favorite family friend, Diane Euten that she loved dearly.

Those who are left to cherish her memory are her children, Teresa (Boyce) McLester of Hartsville, SC, Sherry (Buck) Morton of Marshville, Brian (Amy) Hildreth of Wadesboro, and Allen (Dinah) Hildreth of Peachland; her grandchildren, Jennifer Lynch (Jason McMillan) of Hartsville, SC, Kyle McLester (Caroline) of Lamar, SC,, Matthew Hyatt of Wadesboro, Celeste Scarboro of Marshville, Jason Hildreth of Houston, PA, Jessica Hildreth and Cameron Hildreth both of Peachland; her great-grandchildren, Ainsley Lynch, Liam McLester, and Delaney Scarboro; her great-grandchild of the heart, Lila Price; and her sister, Hilda Maner of Wadesboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Hildreth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadesboro, NC 28170.

CHESTERFIELD, SC – On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Mr. Jesse Preston Short, 92, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with his family at his bedside.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at Morven United Methodist Church with Rev. Amy Lambert and Rev. Earl Bradshaw officiating. Interment will follow in Morven Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro and other times at the home.

Preston was born in Morven, NC on January 7, 1933, and was a son of Ellison Ross Short and Barnice Williams Short. He was a graduate of Morven High School, where he fell in love with classmate Barbara Dawkins. They married on June 7, 1952, and in the following years welcomed four children.

He was a life-long farmer, beginning in his teenage years growing crops of cotton. Throughout his life, Preston was happiest when he was outside in nature and working on his farm.

Preston was a longtime member of Morven United Methodist Church. Throughout the years he served the church as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Church Superintendent and Trustee of the church. He was instrumental in the building of the church’s fellowship hall.

He was a member of Kilwinning Mason Lodge No.64 in Wadesboro.

His love of community service led Preston to serve the town of Morven over forty years in various capacities as a volunteer fireman, town councilman and mayor. He served on the Board of Directors of Anson County Farm Bureau and the Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Program.

Those who are left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 73 years, Barbara Dawkins Short; his children, Kate Walton (Greg) of Pinehurst; Terri Hardison (Bill) of Chesterfield, SC; Lindy Lenz (Henry) of Morven; and Jeff Short (Salena) of Burnsville; his grandchildren, Nikki Phillips (Tony) of Chesterfield, SC; Shane Flake (Cindy) of Concord; Pagan Curry (Matthew), Athens, OH; Cody Short; Matt Pitino of Burnsville; Lacy Pitino of Orange County, CA; and Chance Hardin (Audrey) of Freeland, MI; his great-grandchildren, Trevor Flake, Trevor Brewer, Ava Phillips, Kiersten Flake, Preston Phillips, Colton Hardin, Ryker Hardin, and Grayson Hardin; his sisters, Margaret James of Seneca, SC, and Martha Burns (Collier) of Wadesboro; a special nephew, George Short (Melanie) of Morven and many other nieces and nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents, Preston was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Short, Vero Short, George Short and Ben Short.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Masonic Home for Children, Oxford, NC and Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield, SC.

PEACHLAND - On Monday, August 4, 2025, Mr. Johnny Eddins, 68, passed away at Atrium Health Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

Johnny was born March 26, 1957, in Anson County, NC, was a son of the late Jeremiah Eddins and the late Lena Arnette Eddins. He was a ceramic tile contractor and installer.

Those who are left to cherish his memory are his children, Christina Tyson and husband, Michael, Sr., and Angel Smith; his sister, Melvina Harris, and a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Johnny's family rejoices that he has gone home to be with those he has loved and missed for so long, and we who remain look forward to seeing him again on the other side.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

WADESBORO - On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Sylvia June Starling Meland, 88, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Unionville, NC, with her daughter by her side to be with her Lord.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, August 8, 2025 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Teddy Lawson officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home.

A private interment will be in Anson Memorial Park.

June was born March 2, 1937 in Wadesboro, NC, daughter of the late Lonnie Chester Starling and the late Aline Alexander Starling. She was a graduate of Wadesboro High School and was retired from BC Moore & Sons after many years in retail.

She was a life long member of First Baptist Church Wadesboro and attended the Edna Pearl Little Sunday School class.

June cherished her family and the times they were all together. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Harold William Meland Jr and her son, Tim E. Watts, her daughter, Camilla Grider, and her brother and sister, Larry Starling and Mildred "Mickey" Bacot.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons- in- law, Sharon & Bret Boyer of Unionville, NC; Donna & Doug Paul of Wadesboro; Dawn & Tim Cook of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Kristie Meland of Rincon, GA; her daughter-in-law, Rhonda Watts of Wadesboro; her grandchildren, Stacy Malary of Chevy Chase, MD, Patrick Malary (Stephanie) of Raleigh, Ryan Watts of Monroe, Emma Boyer of Unionville, Miranda Paul Valez,(Alex) of Wadesboro, Brandon Paul (Jessica) of Wadesboro, and Kaitlyn Meland of Rincon, GA; her 6 great grandchildren and special nieces, Debbie Bacot Boan and Ann Bacot Pierce, both of Cheraw, SC.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Union County and Mandy Davis Horne, RN, for the love, care and tenderness shown during such a difficult time.

William "Bill" Thomas Brooks

POLKTON – On Monday, August 4, 2025, Mr. William “Bill” Thomas Brooks, 90, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his bedside.

There will be a memorial service at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Polkton Methodist Church with Rev. Yvonne Hechler officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday.

Bill was born April 3, 1935, in Chesterfield, SC and was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Brooks and the late Sarah Rivers Brooks. He was a 1953 graduate of Polkton High School and a veteran of the United States Army.

He furthered his education at Pfieffer College and later earned a Master of Business Administration from Queens College. He was first employed Abby Manufacturing in Wadesboro, then as County Manager for Anson County, where he was instrumental in the in the development of the county water system, and later worked with W.R. Bonsal in sales for the Eastern United States.

Bill is most remembered for his extensive career with the Town of Polkton. He served as Chief of Police, Town Manager and on the SWAT team (Sewer, Water and Trash), with more than 30 years at the time of his retirement. He also served as an instructor in business education at Anson Community College, now, South Piedmont Community College in Polkton. He attended Polkton Methodist Church.

He was also an accomplished athlete in both high school basketball and baseball and American Legion Baseball. He ran and completed the first Charlotte Marathon and for many years, he ran six miles a day around Polkton.

His family shared many memorable times together at both Ocean Drive Beach and Ocean Isle Beach, as Bill always found immense pleasure in being with his family.

Known for keeping a meticulously manicured lawn, he took considerable pride in his yard work. He crafted the rock wall around their home from rocks taken from both Brooks and Ross homeplaces, and he did it all himself by hand. He also enjoyed various home projects and woodworking.

Of all Bill’s accomplishments, that of being a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather were his greatest to him. His grandchildren affectionately called him Big Daddy.

Those who are left to cherish his memory are his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 67 years, Betty Ross Brooks; their children, Kevin Brooks (Carol) of Denver, Kate Alderson (Mike) of Ocean Isle Beach, and Amy Triplett (Bill) of Murrell’s Inlet; grandchildren, Blaire Johnson (Hunter) of Indian Land, SC, Spenser Spring (AJ) of Charlotte, Summer Powell (Allen) of Ocean Isle Beach, and Rebekah Bennett of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Camden Spring, Lane Spring, Hayes Powell and Griffin Spring; sister, Katherine Long of Monroe; sister-in-law, Linda Horne of Charlotte and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Bill will be remembered fondly for his bright smile, warm handshake and kind words of encouragement for his fellow man.

We are sharing the obituary for Mr. Williamson as a courtesy to his wife and her family, the Bowers family who have been longtime residents of the Burnsville Community of Anson County.

Kenneth Craven Williamson, 93, of Wagram, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on his 93rd birthday, July 27, 2025.Ken was born in Columbus County, North Carolina, to the late Joseph and Gladys Williamson. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in textile chemistry. Over the course of his career, Ken held various positions in textile and plant management and retired from Rite Industries in 1996.Even after retirement, he continued to work as a consulting chemist for Hornwood,Inc. well into his 80s, a testament to his dedication and passion for his field.Ken found great joy in gardening and took pride in the beautiful handiwork he and his wife, Molly, cultivated around their home on the Deercroft golf course. He loved sharing photos of their garden with family and friends. A devoted golfer and a lover of animals, Ken was affectionately known in the community as the "treat man" for his constant care and kindness towards dogs.Ken will always be remembered as a kind, gentle soul who never had an unkind word to say to anyone. His warmth, compassion,and quiet strength touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.Ken is survived by his devoted wife, Molly Bowers Williamson, who lovingly cared for him in his later years; his children, Suzanne Lee (Mike), Lynn Noudewo ( Emmanuel), and Mark Williamson (Jennifer); his grandchildren,Noelle Noudewo ( fiancé Nathan) and Jenna Williams (Josh); and his great-grandson Luke Williams.A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cure JM Foundation for juvenile myositis research at https://www.curejm.org/ on behalf of his great- niece Noelle Whitt.
