Opal Lee, “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Returns Home 85 Years After Racist Mob Forced Her Family Out

Fort Worth, TX – In 1939, when Opal Lee was just 12 years old, a mob of nearly 500 white residents violently attacked her family’s new home in Fort Worth. Windows were smashed, furniture was destroyed, and the Lees were driven out simply because they were a Black family moving into a white neighborhood. Police were present but did nothing to stop the destruction. The family never returned.

More than eight decades later, in 2024, Lee—now 97 and celebrated nationwide as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”—finally came home. Trinity Habitat for Humanity built her a new house on the very same lot, selling it to her for just $10 and covering construction costs with the help of local organizations.

The homecoming carried profound symbolism, taking place during Juneteenth celebrations—a holiday Lee tirelessly fought to have recognized nationally. In 2021, her lifelong advocacy paid off when Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday.

Lee’s return stands as both a personal victory and a reminder of resilience, justice, and the power of never giving up on a dream deferred.
