Kenneth Bradley was admitted to our hospital after a life-threatening battle with Guillain-Barré syndrome, which left him unable to move or eat safely. His goals were simple yet powerful: walk again and enjoy a hamburger before discharge.

Through hard work and determination, Kenneth made remarkable progress. Day by day, he regained strength, learned to walk, navigated stairs and returned to his self-care routine. He even passed his swallow study and celebrated with that long-awaited hamburger!

Kenneth’s journey didn’t stop there — he proudly flexed in the mirror with his restored arm strength and left the hospital walking independently, just in time for Thanksgiving and his birthday.

Join us in celebrating Kenneth’s resilience and the incredible teamwork that made this recovery possible

Makayla was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer that caused her platelet levels to skyrocket. As a result, she had two strokes, multiple blood clots and a heart attack. Her mother, Tasha, was told Makayla wouldn’t make it through the night — but she did. Over the next three months, Makayla endured multiple surgeries, another stroke, meningitis and lost her ability to walk. When she arrived at our Encompass Health hospital in Texarkana, Texas, she was determined to walk out on her own. Thanks to intensive therapy from our care team, Makayla accomplished that goal and more.

Congratulations, Makayla, and thank you for trusting us with your care!

In observance of Veterans Day, we proudly recognize and honor all who have served in our armed forces. This year alone, we’ve had the privilege of caring for nearly 6,000 veterans — each one a testament to courage, sacrifice and service.

We are equally proud of the more than 1,400 veterans who work within our hospitals nationwide. Their commitment to our country continues in the compassionate, high-quality care they provide to our patients every day. Their stories, their dedication and their values enrich our teams and inspire us all.

To our veteran patients and employees: thank you for your service. Your impact is felt deeply, and your legacy lives on in the lives you touch.

"In the Navy, teamwork was essential. That mindset carries over to my current role, where even small tasks play a part in ensuring patients are discharged safely and set up for success at home."
- Darlene Luque, Navy
Athens, Georgia

"Serving in the military taught me the value of teamwork, discipline and taking pride in both my work and my service. It helped shape a strong work ethic and a commitment to doing things the right way and on time."
- Richard Mathabel, Air Force
Harmarville, Pennsylvania

"My time in the Marine Corps taught me discipline, time management and leadership — skills I use every day."
- Nathan Patton, Marines
Abilene, Texas

"I've always had a passion for people, which drew me to HR. Supporting others was a big part of what I did in the military, so continuing that work in a civilian setting just made sense."

Jan Murray was recently referred to us after a hip fracture. At the time, he was unable to perform basic transfers and could not walk. In addition to being a stroke survivor, Jan is also a veteran. He came to us determined to work hard and regain his independence.

He made remarkable progress. At the beginning of his rehabilitation, he could only walk with the support of our body weight-assisted system, the Bioness Vector. Over time, he built strength and confidence, eventually walking up and down stairs and walking with a crutch. Most importantly — he was able to home in his family’s vehicle instead of an ambulance.

We wish Jan all the best as he transitions home and continues his recovery.

With support from our expert care team, Jonnie made remarkable progress. Prior to discharge, she was able to stand and walk short distances using a rolling walker. She was thrilled to be discharged home to her loving family.

Way to go, Jonnie! We’re so glad you chose Encompass Health for your recovery.

Umar was admitted to UVA Encompass Health following an extended hospitalization after a motorcycle accident. He suffered multiple fractures and spinal injuries that left him needing assistance with all daily tasks, including bathing, dressing and eating. He was unable to move himself in bed, stand or transfer to a chair.

After two weeks of hard work at our hospital, Umar returned home to his very supportive wife and family. He now uses an assistive device and is able to walk, climb stairs and largely care for himself. Well done, Umar!

Here’s what Umar had to say about his care:
“Getting through rehab wasn’t just about healing my body; it was finding inner strength and pushing past what I thought I could handle. I couldn’t have done it without the help from the Encompass Health team. Shout out to my occupational and physical therapists, Emma and Ashley, for their support and for pushing me to exceed my limits.”

We’re grateful Umar chose us for his rehabilitation journey and trusted our team with his care.

Now back at home, she's looking forward to finally running that half marathon she was training for before her injury and going hiking with her family.

Happy Halloween, or should we say Howl-oween? At our Wichita Falls, Texas hospital they celebrated the spooky season with a Halloween puppy parade. Therapy dogs of all shapes and sizes put on their scariest — and cutest — costumes and paraded around the hospital to the delight of both patients and staff.

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary, and neither does recovery. At our rehabilitation hospitals our staff find unique ways like these to brighten the days of our patients while also helping them reach their recovery goals.

After a stroke left her unable to move the right side of her body, speak or swallow safely, Sarah Hanger came to our hospital determined to recover and return home to her dog. Her motivation never wavered.

Following weeks of intensive rehabilitation, Sarah made incredible progress. She regained the ability to speak in full sentences, eat a regular diet, walk with assistance, climb stairs and complete parts of her self-care routine with adaptations.

To prepare for discharge, Sarah and her husband, Bobby, participated in a thorough training session that included Bobby staying overnight to ensure they were ready for the transition home. While Sarah is excited to be heading home, we hope to see her at our Stroke Comeback Club in the coming months!
