Lessons from today’s hike (thank goodness for the internet): Cuscuta californica is a parasitic vine which climbs other plants and takes nutrition directly from them via a haustorium. The dodder resembles a pile of yellow-orange straw wrapped tightly around its host plant. It is mostly stem; the leaves are reduced to scales on the stem's surface, since they are not needed for photosynthesis while the dodder is obtaining nutrients from its host.

I celebrate to show the whole world that I’m not ashamed of who I love and who I am. That’s the point of pride, to show that I matter as much as everyone else. My trans 🏳️‍⚧️ siblings have always been a part of this demonstration and, this year, it seems the harsh glare of bigotry is shining a little brighter on them. Instead of listening to and lifting up their voices, lawmakers are trying to “save” them from themselves. This act of saviorism perfectly exemplifies what happens when one powerful group thinks their values are more important than the actual experiences and values of a marginalized group. We may not always relate to or understand the needs of others, but the best way to try is to listen to their stories and perspectives.

The thing is, our body wants to be a certain size and the more we fight it, the more our body will fight back. For much of human history food has been scarce (winter, famine, etc.) and hard to come by and so we've evolved to survive those periods of food scarcity by storing fat. This same thing happens when we are in a constant state of dieting (starving). So eat the foods that make you feel good mentally and physically. Stop saying no to foods you love. confront the people who make you feel shameful about what you eat. And eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full.

It's true that high blood pressure is 2-3 times more likely in people with obesity. But the body fat itself is not the reason. High blood pressure can be genetic, it could be from an imbalance in fatty acid intake, insulin resistance causing damage to blood vessels and arteries, etc.
I argue that the real association with heart disease is that larger people are more likely to have tried dangerous weigh-loss methods. Weight loss pills that that doctors used to prescribe are now known to increase heart disease. Medical professionals will argue that bigger people are harder to treat (which is to imply that bigger people are sh*t out of luck) and are treated as such which makes them less likely to seek medical attention in the first place. Folks who are of lower socioeconomic statuses are more likely to be in bigger bodies and are therefore less likely to eat healthier foods due to price barriers. They're also less likely to exercise due to lack of public parks, access to gyms, or lack of time.
So, high blood pressure and weight gain might be caused by similar things, but high blood pressure is certainly not caused by fat.
