In recognition of National Third Shift Workers Day, we want to shine a light on the incredible teams across Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority and Tsali Care Center who continue caring for our patients and residents long after most of the world has gone to sleep.

Third shift staff are often the quiet constant behind the scenes, providing comfort, compassion, safety, and healing through every overnight hour. Their dedication helps ensure care never stops, no matter the time on the clock.

As a special treat during Hospital Week, breakrooms at CIHA and Tsali Care Center have been stocked tonight with drinks, sweet treats, and snacks as an extra thank you for our overnight staff and all they do for our community.

This week, we celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week and the incredible individuals who care for our residents each and every day.

Skilled nursing is what compassion looks like in action. It is patience during difficult moments, kindness during quiet moments, and treating every resident with dignity, respect, and love. Our nursing team brings comfort, strength, and connection to those they serve. They build relationships that go far beyond clinical care, creating a true sense of home and family within Tsali Care Center.

“Di qwa tse li i yu sdi” — Like Family to Me — reflects the heart of what our staff provide every day through their dedication and care.

To all of our nurses, CNAs, support staff, and caregivers, thank you for the difference you make in the lives of our residents and their families. Your work matters, your compassion is seen, and your commitment is deeply appreciated.

Happy National Skilled Nursing Care Week from Tsali Care Center!

Congratulations to Kaylin Smith, Occupational Therapist Assistant II – Tsali Care Center, for being selected the winner of the Guiding Principle Right Way Award for the 4th quarter of 2025-2026.

The Right Way Award (Du yu ga dv). This award embodies the ability to develop relationships with patients and/or employees that directly relate to your effectiveness in embracing the relationship-based culture at Cherokee Indian Hospital. Employees selected for this quarter’s award will hold onto a 9-inch clear trophy, accented with a special “The Right Way” engraving, and will receive a $200 monetary award (net up for taxes).

Kaylin Smith consistently demonstrates ᏚᏳᎦᏛ — “The Right Way” through her compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to building meaningful connections with both residents and colleagues. This award recognizes employees who embody all four of CIHA’s Guiding Principles, and Kaylin exemplifies each of them in her daily work:

Guiding Principle One – ᎤᏩᏒᎤᏓᏅᏖᎸ (“The One Who Helps You from the Heart”):
Kaylin approaches every single resident with genuine empathy and kindness, ensuring that each individual feels seen, heard, and valued. She takes the time to truly listen, learn about their personal preferences, and provide comfort in ways that reflect heartfelt care. Her actions go far beyond routine responsibilities, whether advocating for a resident’s well being or going out of her way to bring a resident their favorite meal from their preferred restaurant to encourage them to eat, she demonstrates a deep and sincere commitment to caring from her heart.

Guiding Principle Two – ᏙᎯ (to-hi) (“A State of Peace and Balance”):
Kaylin brings a calm, reassuring presence to every interaction. She creates an environment where residents feel safe and at ease, and where trust can grow naturally. By approaching each situation with patience and understanding, she fosters a sense of comfort and emotional balance for both residents and coworkers.

Guiding Principle Three – ᏂᎯᏣᏤᎵ (“It Belongs to You”):
Kaylin takes great ownership of the care she provides. She invests time in understanding each resident on a personal level, learning their interests, hobbies, and communication preferences, and uses that knowledge to tailor care in meaningful ways. Whether engaging residents in conversations they enjoy or encouraging participation in activities that bring them joy, she ensures that care is not only effective but also personal and empowering.

Guiding Principle Four – ᏗᏆᏤᎵᎢᏳᏍᏗ (“Like Family to Me”):
Kaylin treats residents and coworkers alike with the same warmth and respect she would offer her own family. She fosters strong relationships built on trust, compassion, and connection. Residents often express that Kaylin makes them feel like they are her most important priority, a powerful reflection of the genuine bonds she builds. Her positivity and willingness to support her team also create a work environment where others feel encouraged and valued. Kaylin’s care is deeply personal and intentional. She understands that healthcare is not just about meeting needs, but about honoring dignity, building trust, and creating meaningful human connections. She goes above and beyond to advocate for her residents, ensuring they are supported not only physically but also emotionally. By taking the time to learn who her residents are beyond their care plans, she creates an environment where individuals feel truly known, respected, and cared for.

Her impact extends far beyond resident care. Kaylin is a supportive, positive, and dependable teammate who strengthens those around her. She is always willing to help, always encouraging, and always striving to make a difference. Her compassion, initiative, and dedication consistently exceed expectations and uplift both residents and colleagues alike.

Kaylin’s work is a powerful reminder that the heart of CIHA healthcare lies in relationships. She does not simply complete tasks; she creates connections, builds trust, and brings comfort to those she serves.

These examples demonstrate why Kaylin Smith has been selected as the 1st quarter recipient of The Right Way Award. Through her genuine compassion, selfless actions, and commitment to others, Kaylin reflects the true spirit of ᏚᏳᎦᏛ — “The Right Way.”
