Jill Connolly, MSN,RN Lifelong Student of Functional Medicine and Integrative Nurse Coaching I am also a Nursing Instructor and absolutely LOVE the art of teaching!

I have been an RN for 16 years, working mostly in Medical Surgical care as well as Medical ICU. I have a profound passion for Functional Medicine, nutrition, as well as educating myself on healing the mind, body and soul through plant medicines. I love to spend my free time learning about Energy Healing, including all types of meditation as well as learning about healing herbs that the Earth provides for us. I have an amazing, supportive circle of family and friends, whom I adore to the moon and back!

This week in Functional Medicine, I learned about Berberine! A highly bio-active compound that can be extracted from different plants including a shrub called Berberis.

Many studies have been done on Berberine's ability to decrease Insulin resistance and decrease sugar production in the Liver.

"In a 2008 study of 116 people with diabetes, taking 1 gram of berberine per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 20%" (healthline.com)

In several studies, Berberine, along with lifestyle changes has been shown to reduce HbA1c, and it works well with other blood sugar lowering drugs. It has also shown to reduce Cholesterol as well as the risk of Heart Disease.
