“What do you do?”

The answer isn’t really “massage therapy”. I’ve taken the core concepts & education, then applied it to my lifelong foundation of horsemanship. Years of learning how to move and manipulate each part of the body under saddle, from riding world champion western pleasure, hunter under saddle and then moving into the cow disciplines and working for top cutters has developed my eye & my feel.
When I do an intake & assessment with a client, what I really want to know is what are you feeling in the horse? Do his ribs feel stuck when you’re turning? Is he bracing against your leg? Are lead changes challenging one way? Does he wring his tail when he cuts? How do you feel? Where are you sore after you ride? Do you keep dropping a stirrup?

Yes I can absolutely work on a human and do a full body massage with no real main complaints / goals. But what keeps me wanting to go work everyday are the sessions that put my brain to work on the puzzle of improving performance 💪.

This Friday/Sat I will be at the North Country Stock Horse Association show! Competitors, come chat with me for a free assessment to discuss any pain, issues or goals with improving your, and your horses, physicality and athletic ability in and out of the saddle. I love to discuss these goals and how I can help you using my knowledge and education in massage, anatomy & physiology combined with a lifetime of riding western performance horses . This exposure of saddling for and assisting top trainers has laid a foundation of appreciation for what it takes to make and maintain athletes 💪. It’s going to be chilly at this show but I will be at horse shows all year with my tools for both humans & horses. Send me a message or comment below with any questions!

Maybe I need to do another tack room photoshoot but until then I’m going to continue getting my mileage out of this photo:)

Lua is my elusive white whale.

Her lameness came on as an insidious mystery. As a bodyworker, and as an owner it has caused me so much guilt and grief.

Since moving her here in 2021 she has deteriorated before my eyes into a barely comfortably maintained pasture horse/broodmare. It happened slowly at first, and I’m going to be honest, the stress of living here for years with no purpose or autonomy has manifested itself into physical issues that an otherwise normal person would have caught.

I’ve struggled over the years to maintain my own health and yo yo’d back and forth with fitness. Quitting drinking was a big boss move in 2024. But it wasn’t until I fully established myself here with my green card and license to work that I got my physical and mental self back in order. I have to take accountability now, while acknowledging I was doing the best I could with what I had at the time, but wow did Lua ever pay the price for that.

With clear eyes and the capacity to do right now she’s on a path that hopefully corrects some of this. I’ve had tip to tail xray’d, she’s had injections, I have every zip zap contraption on the market. What has been the greatest thing I can do for her, bodywork wise? The absolute most gentle applications possible. One simple strip of K tape on the coronet bands and gentle myofasical holds with absolutely no agenda and all the time in the world. My current purpose on the soft tissue side of this project is to assist with compensation patterns and alleviate pain.

I have to constantly put it in terms of having a human client. I can’t “fix” them. It’s not a one session situation. Take a whole-being view, and apply modalities to what can be currently helped or changed. Have them leave each session feeling a little bit better and motivated to keep improving .

🎥 two 30 second clips out of a 10 min long video capturing how little is done in my truly favorite style of bodywork

Big thanks to the professionals helping me with this one ❤️.

Early birds!! 🥚

Horse show season is going to have me out of town the majority of Saturdays March - October . I’m looking at opening up hours another day a week and wanted to see if there would be any takers for morning appointments? Then I can come home and ride in the afternoon:)

I worked on a cowboy yesterday. He was tough, fit, strong muscles that have worked long hours and been on the end of many ropes in the pasture and arena. The kind of strong muscles that if you stop moving and relax you have to coax them to hold you back up again. Understandably he was guarded about getting these sores muscles squeezed and prodded. He was distracted by the goings on around the barn as he’s more used to getting jobs done than being still and having the attention on him. The session was kept pretty light, stretching and compressing some big muscles where pressure felt good, more non invasive work where pressure felt painful. Moments of seeing him take a deep breath and let his guard down were all I was hoping for. He’s been convinced to give bodywork a try and now that he knows what to expect I can get a little more done next time .

By the way, the working cowboy I’m talking about was a 11 year old gelding.

Today I got to ride my pretty palomino outside in the sunshine, work on a few horses, and visit a good friend. It was the perfect summer day in February 🤣☀️

⚡️ Equipod recovery session for the 3 year old that’s just been a star student going through his cowhorse training program

👐 Hands on assessment and massage for 11 year old all around ranch / rope horse with the jammed up (technical lingo) neck and tight / sore hip flexors

🫶 myofascial release & Bemer for my favorite roan dinosaur that “only tried to bite us a few times” . I loved this one because you can feel and see the difference in this horse with all the work that’s gone into his soft tissue and performance longevity.

It should go without saying that I’m a member of a professional organization for the human side of my practice (American Massage Therapy Association). This is the organization that I’m a member of for the equine . Collectively these associations provide me with clear guidance on continuing education, ethics, standards, and provide access to insurance. A recognized school, minimum number hours of training, and passing their exam that test core competency is required for membership . If you see this logo it lets you know the practitioner has held themselves to the highest available standard in an unregulated industry.

Tools are only as good as the hands using them. From tens of thousands for machines, to ten dollar scrapers, massage guns and styrofoam foam rollers you’ve had since college.

Knowing when, where and why is the key. Some clients like to talk, it helps them to relax. Similar to the horse that does better with a buddy nearby and a hay net.

Some clients can relax and go within. They get a lot out of stillness. These are the like the horses whose heads bob and lips hang when it looks like my hands aren’t moving / doing anything.

Contrast that to the horse that does better with some vibration, rocking, compressions.
These are all tools. Having the ability to read the body and respond comes from education, knowledge and mostly practice.

Every time I have a client on my table it’s another opportunity to have communication with treatment. This sharpens my ability to know what to bring to the horse when they present a response to me.

⚡️ the last video I’m demonstrating one of my favorite pec stretches by getting into a restorative pose using a foam roller along the spine, arms out at sides and a 5lb weight in each hand to help open the front body ⚡️

My skill set is wide. My approach is unique. My standards are high.
