Erasing Stomach Cancer VA is a new grass roots effort in the state of Virginia aimed at increasing awareness, fundraising and support in the battle against Stomach Cancer. The founder of this page lost his mother at age 55 to Stage 4 Stomach Cancer on June 23, 2014 and is determined through advocacy, communication and education to assist in the mission to find a cure. According to the American Cancer Society, here are some key statistics about the disease:
Around 24,590 cases of Stomach Cancer will be diagnosed in 2015. Approximately 10,720 people will die from this type of cancer. The average age of diagnosis is 69 years old. A person has a 1 in 111 chance of developing Stomach Cancer. Stomach Cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. What makes Stomach Cancer a silent killer is that the symptoms of early-stage Stomach Cancer are difficult to detect and can mimic other ailments such as heartburn, indigestion, nausea and a poor appetite. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 5 Stomach Cancers in the U.S. can be found at an early stage before it has metastasized. And the overall 5-year relative survival rate of all people with Stomach Cancer in the U.S. is approximately 29 percent. Stomach Cancer patients who have a surgical option have a 5-year observed survival rate at Stage IV of only 4 percent. The Erasing Stomach Cancer VA page was also created to give Stomach Cancer patients, affected families and survivors in Virginia a meeting point to discuss the illness. We also welcome commentaries from licensed doctors, researchers and gastroenterologists in Virginia who are also working desperately to find a cure. Page followers are encouraged to check in weekly as this endeavor comes together. And please remember that if you have any questions pertaining to cancer, please consult your physician first.
